Apex Legends Ranked redesigned to better reward teamwork, not individual skill

Apex Legends players have been asking for a change to ranked mode for several seasons — and Respawn’s developers seem to have been taking notes. Apex’s ranked mode gets a makeover in Season 13: Savior, and there are quite a few changes.

At the heart of these changes is a greater emphasis on good teamwork. Ranked playlists have so far mostly rewarded individual skills, with players earning Ranked Points (RP) for kills and assists. Contributing to winning the firefight is paramount, and that means punishing players who are not good at combat but can contribute to the team’s victory in other ways, such as finding good loot, setting defenses, and sharing healing items.

To help players adept at supporting allies, Respawn is changing the Apex Hero Ranking in three key ways.

RP, Kills and Assists

One of the biggest rework in Ranked is affecting how much RP players get per kill. Starting in Season 13, every member of the squad will receive RP whenever any member of the squad is killed.

The amount of RP you earn depends on whether you contribute to kills. For kills that players do not help their teammates complete, RP will be rewarded 50%. Dead teammates will not receive any RP.

Another big change is the complete removal of the much-maligned kill limit, which stopped rewarding players with RP after a certain number of kills and/or assists in a single match. Beginning in Season 13, Apex Legends’ Ranked Mode will replace the kill cap with a base RP reward that tapers off after each kill until a minimum base is reached.

This is going to be huge for the highest ranked players, as it’s hard to get higher ranks at Diamond or higher (which gives you a huge RP bonus) if you don’t win matches regularly. Now, you don’t necessarily have to live in the top three very often to be successful – if someone on your team is doing well, supporting them and their bloodlust can continue to give you RP.

Assists have also been improved. The 10-second time window for assists has been increased to 15 seconds, and refreshes when an enemy is knocked down by a teammate, revived, and quickly knocked down again.

Probably to balance these changes, killing a lower level player will now earn less RP. In Ranked, you get extra RP for killing higher-level players, and less RP for killing lower-level players—this is a change made to Ranked in Season 11. For example, if you’re a Bronze player and your two allies are Gold, you’ll earn more if your squad beats all Silvers’ teams, while your teammates won’t earn as much.

Rank downgrades and promotions

For the first time since the launch of Ranked Mode, players can downgrade. Players will receive relegation protection for three games, but after that, losing RP will result in relegation. Downgraded players can now downgrade to their previous level and must grind off 50% of their level to level up again. Players are rewarded with 100 RP each time they level up to a higher level.

The RP thresholds have also changed a lot: the number of RPs required to advance to the next division has been increased by 200. On paper, this all sounds like it’s going to be balanced against the extra RP people get from the changes in kills and assists, but we’ll have to wait to see how it shakes up in practice when Season 13 kicks off.

New levels and RP thresholds

Respawn now adds a level below Bronze: Rookie. Rookie-level players don’t have to spend RP to play ranked matches, but Bronze is another story. Previously, Bronze players did not need to spend any RP to play a match, but starting in Season 13, Bronze players will need to pay 15-24 RP per ranked match (depending on their division). Competition entry fees have been revised to increase for all tiers, increasing with each division.

Respawn said in a blog post that this is just the beginning of an “ongoing journey” to improve players’ experience in ranked, so it’s likely to see more changes in the coming months. Fans will be able to test the reloaded ranked mode when Apex Legends Season 13: Saviors launches on May 10.
