‘Avatar 2’ returns Sigourney Weaver in a new, unexpected role
Avatar: Way of the Water’s cast included Sigourney Weaver, which confused fans for a while because her character Dr. Grace Augustine died at the end of the 2009 film. Well, Weaver is returning in a brand new and unexpected role, revealed today by Empire. Grace didn’t reincarnate, instead, Weaver gave her talents a whole new role.
Weaver will play a Na’vi character named Kiri. She is the adopted teenage daughter of Jack (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Weaver talked about the challenges of playing a young man at her own age of 72.
“I think we pretty much all remember how we felt as teenagers,” she said. “Of course I do. I was 5′ 10″ or 5′ 11” when I was 11. I feel strongly that Kiri is embarrassed a lot of the time. She’s looking for who she is. I’m so excited to take this challenge through [director James Cameron]. “
Cameron himself said that Weaver playing a small child was a huge acting challenge. “Seeger thought it was funny,” Cameron said. Weaver worked with a group of teenage girls to help shape the characters, the report said.
“Sigourney has gotten younger,” Cameron said. “She looked younger and more energetic, and she never completely left Kiri throughout our entire shoot. Her face was radiant, her feet were light and her spirits were fun.”
The Way of Water is also written by Stephen Long, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pound, Edie Falco, Jermaine Clement, Giovanni Ray Starring Bessie and Kate Winslet. The film opens on December 16, 2022.
Meanwhile, the original Avatar will return to theaters on September 23.
