Tentacle Day Remake

Tentacle Days: Remastered

The Day of the Tentacle in 1993 was still a pretty ridiculous hit from the golden age of LucasArts before it came out in multiple divisions. Finally remastered in 2016, Day of the Tentacle remains a masterpiece, setting the stage for a genre that was about to peak. The remake is a perfect reminder of that, sharpening the visuals with original hand-painted art, adding a high-fidelity soundtrack, and retaining all the classic gameplay that makes this game a hilarious game. Day of the Tentacle Remastered is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and mobile.

Grim Fandango Remake

Grim Fandango Remake

At LucasArts’ best, Grim Fandango’s story of love and death is a sprawling adventure spanning several years. When Manny Calavera’s Underworld Tour first came out in 1998, full of brilliant voice acting and watertight level design, it set a new benchmark for gaming and is still considered the pinnacle of the point-and-click genre. The remake is well worth a look, and like the best games in the category, it includes a number of major upgrades. You can get it on consoles, PC and mobile.

Monkey Island Series

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge

LucasArts has been creating since its inception, and when it released The Secret of Monkey Island in 1990, the studio continued to prove it was a heavyweight to be reckoned with. The witty, charming and beautifully animated sequel further fleshes out the story of would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood and the comical world he inhabits. LeChuck’s Revenge and Curse of Monkey Island both contributed to the creation of an incredible trilogy of high seas adventures, and while other games may not be able to regain that magic, the entire series is still worth checking out on PC. Return to Monkey Island will be the sixth entry in the series and the first in over a decade.

Sam and Max save the world

Sam and Max: Save the World

Telltale Games found the secret to Sam and Max’s success, and the revival of the classic LucasArts IP comes just in time. Featuring an original story told episodic, Liberty Police are back in action, ready to turn the town upside down in search of clues. Somehow, Sam and Max saving the world is somehow both weird and logical, and it’s a wild return for the duo. Later seasons may not have achieved the same level of quality, but the witty shenanigans of the first season are still a highlight worth experiencing. Sam and Max Save the World is available on Xbox, Switch and PC.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Game Series

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Game Series

In its heyday, Telltale Games was a creative force in the gaming world, often delivering critically acclaimed point-and-click games. The Walking Dead was the studio’s breakthrough game, and has spawned a series of episodic adventures across numerous popular franchises. Building on earlier projects and defining the studio for a new decade, The Walking Dead Games is a haunting collection of episodic horror, fast-paced QTE, and decisions with real consequences. Five games in the Walking Dead series have been released. The first entries are always the best, and there are some not-so-great spin-offs, but the storyline at the end brings Clementine’s emotional journey to an impactful end. The Walking Dead’s structure and gameplay make its way into other Telltale adventures, such as the excellent Telltale’s Batman and The Wolf Among Us. You can play The Walking Dead on consoles, PC, and mobile devices.

king’s task

king’s task

Time has had an impact on the King’s Quest series, but the original hit remains an extremely important part of the game’s history. Essentially helping Sierra Entertainment develop into a gaming powerhouse in the 1980s, King’s Quest was a pioneer in using animation and almost 3D environments to create graphic adventures. If you want to enter that kingdom and experience a less medieval point-and-click approach, check out the 2015 remake for a nostalgic dive into the past.

Madman Building

Madman Building

The game introduced the world to the revolutionary design of the SCUMM interface, and Maniac Mansion paved the way for LucasArts to create some of the best point-and-click games ever created. Meanwhile, Maniac Mansion is more than just a genre-defining tech showcase. It’s a game that makes fun of horror movies and B-movies, always thematically fun and thinking outside the narrative frame. Technology has come and gone, but a sincere affection for its cinematic inspiration and heartfelt humor has helped define an era of gaming. You can buy Maniac Mansion for cheap on Steam.

fantasy

fantasy

Point and click games have been used in a variety of genres, but Phantasmagoria is one of the few games that bravely uses this format for horror. A far cry from Roberta Williams’ more family-friendly King’s Quest, Phantasmagoria mixes FMV with the groundbreaking terrifying encounters of the time. While some of the visuals may be outdated by today’s standards, the game still has a constantly disturbing flair. It’s an interactive B-movie with some of the best over-acting around. A cheesy classic that was unique for its time.

The Fate of Indiana Jones and Atlantis

The Fate of Indiana Jones and Atlantis

Harrison Ford’s whip-wielding archaeological hero was destined to make video game headlines, and in 1992 he set out on what was arguably the best Indiana Jones game. The Fate of Atlantis is an adventure impossible on screen, a bravado full of mystery and danger, offering a variety of play styles. With its brain-challenging and punchy action, Indiana Jones’ game was another highlight of the LucasArts fedora’s debut.

No Game: The Wrong Dimension

No Game: The Wrong Dimension

No Game: Wrong Dimensions is a high-concept title that you can point to and possibly click on, a collection of meta reviews and goofs that never takes itself too seriously. It’s one of those games that must be played to understand, as its abstract design and clever puzzles create one of the best paradoxes you’ll ever interact with. It’s a game, but it’s also no one. The only way to make that statement meaningful is to try this underrated gem for yourself.

Procession to Calvary

Procession to Calvary

Every great point-and-click game has an element that helps it stand out from its peers, and for The Procession To Calvary, the X-factor is its beautiful absurdity. Taking the value of the museum’s fine Renaissance art and using these assorted canvases to paint a puzzling picture, this game is full of Pythonic humor. Smart dialogue and bizarrely fun puzzles make this a must-play for anyone who likes the point-and-click genre.

gorogoa

gorogoa

Gorogoa is a point-and-click game in an art film format that incorporates sliding puzzles into its elegant design, and Gorogoa still manages to use these cathartic themes to create exciting moments in its world. Even if you can’t solve the puzzles, this game is beautifully crafted and will challenge your cognition.

Norco

Norco

Norco is an adventure game with a more retro inspiration in its art direction, a more somber tale of southern life. Melancholy characters inhabit a land scarred by the relentless march of the oil industry, environmental destruction has begun, and a community is under siege in a game with a deep storyline. Its league is more somber than anything else on this list, but Norco still manages to offer a glimmer of hope in its pixelated tale of decay.
