It’s been over a year since Abandoned was first announced on the PlayStation Blog, and by now you’ve probably heard of the controversial game in several games Very different contexts. Soon after it was revealed, some fans began to speculate that the game was Hideo Kojima’s secret project, or maybe even his return to the Silent Hill franchise after releasing PT eight years ago. To counter their claims, others point to Blue Box Game Studios’ well-documented and lackluster development history, arguing that Abandoned is just another in a series of games the studio has announced that will never be released.

Hasan Kahraman, the project’s lead developer, has said that Abandoned is exactly what he’s always said: a standalone survival horror about a lone survivor trapped in the woods by a cult. Over the past year, however, onlookers have also seen it turn into a game about rampant superintelligent AI. Recently, it was said to be a game about vampires. For now, there’s no meaningful evidence that Abandoned exists in any real way — despite a long list of questionable business deals, unpleasant leaks, and a chat room full of fans, including at least one kid , the game’s lead developer has misled a captive audience for months.

Despite a fall 2021 release on PS5, several people close to Kahraman told Esports.com.tnthere are no games — at least not one in active development. The reason for this isn’t to be part of some long-running scam Kojima ARG, as fans once suspected. In fact, those close to Kahraman told Esports.com.tnthat despite Kahraman’s public claims that the game’s development is underway, he privately admits that Abandoned is on hold and that he first needs to fund its development with a playable prologue, and our sources indicate that he There seems to be no rush to create.

Interviews with more than half a dozen people who have been in close contact with Kahraman since September 2021 detail a chaotic game and a developer that promises a lot, including paid work for fans, but delivers very little.

Two months after Abandoned’s original reveal sparked a brief spark of fan theory, Kahraman shared a deleted tweet from Blue Box’s Twitter account, saying the reveal was “closer” and suggesting the game’s real name starts with S Begins with an S and ends with an L. By publicly diving into Silent Hill speculation, Kahraman rekindles the theory that there is more to the game than players initially believed, and so Abandoned Summer begins. Multiple Discord servers, subreddits, and other forums have been created with the sole purpose of trying to find the curtain behind the proverbial Kojima and/or Konami.

The now-deleted tweet sent by Blue Box has rekindled Silent Hill fans theories after they went quiet for two months.

It’s not an unreasonable belief—it’s something Kojima has done twice, after all. First, when he briefly hides behind a fake studio, Moby Dick, and uses a stand-in developer under the pseudonym Joakim Mogren to market the game, then reveals that he’s behind the stunt and that the team’s game is actually his subordinate A project, Gear Solid V by Metal Konami. Later, PT was blamed for the 7780s, and another studio invented the full cloth so Kojima could surprise players with what the playable trailer actually teased: the long-awaited Silent Hill sequel.

For a few days, Abandoned was arguably another Kojima trick. But as theories about “abandoned” get more outlandish every day, forums are beginning to express utopianism, a desire-fulfilling drive to find patterns in places that don’t exist. These numerous patterns are well documented and debunked. But what matters is not that fans come together to discuss the game, but that Kahraman seems to be there too, following the community he helped create as it tirelessly produces theories about the true nature of his indie games.

Over time, he seems to have changed the direction and concept of the game to transform what fans say. When they thought it was Silent Hill, he released a short trailer for this weird, barely featureless standalone app on PS5, which contained music very similar to the longtime Silent Hill composer Music by Akira Yamaoka. When fans thought he was making fun of the Metal Gear project, he remade the cult-centric horror story to focus instead on artificial intelligence programs breaking the fourth wall and secret government cover-ups.

There are also many mysterious things about the Blue Box, like who else is on the team. About 50 people, including the outsourced studio, are working for Abandoned, Kahraman has said. The Dutch Chamber of Commerce confirmed to Esports.com.tnthat Blue Box was founded in 2015 with 10 employees. To date, Blue Box’s registration with the Chamber has never been updated to reflect the different numbers of employees, though a representative told Esports.com.tnthat it’s the business’s responsibility to update such details. Kahraman did renew the registration twice in the past seven years: once to change the business address, and once to register another trade name, Pixel Molecule, that the company doesn’t appear to be using.

Much of what Esports.com.tnhas learned about developers recently comes from people who know about private and very exclusive online group chat rooms. Since last fall, this has been the space where Kahraman shares game material, such as screenshots, animations, and even a page for game scripts, sources said. The initial iteration of the group consisted of about a dozen fans from Discord servers that sprung up to study the mysteries surrounding the game. Kahraman hand-picked people to invite based on people he “researched,” he once told the group.

People in his group chats often swore secrecy—some were even asked to sign a vague NDA, Esports.com.tnobtained a copy. According to sources, Kahraman seeks out likable fans, and when some members of the group question his empty promises and the difference between public and private comments, he will kick them out or form a new, sometimes smaller group A group with only new and/or still affable fans. The group went through about six iterations, attracting a variety of fans from different social media platforms. For a while, some members stayed because they still believed in the project; others just liked exclusive access.

People familiar with the group describe Kahraman as two-faced, prone to mood swings, and frequent heated arguments when members of the group demand updates on progress or question his honesty. He would gushed about apologizing afterwards, at times attributing his outbursts to the pressure he was under from a wave of fan theories.

A person told Esports.com.tnthat Kahraman admitted to leaving some people in the group so they wouldn’t reveal what he had previously shared with them. He started sending voice messages, which sources believe is a tactic he uses to avoid taking screenshots of conversations. According to a source, this is where the “most shocking words” came from. He left at least one member feeling “wounded,” while others were frustrated or confused by how he said one thing publicly and then privately said another to his inner circle.

Often, when members leak what he shares, Kahraman will publicly deny that the material is part of his project, while he privately tries to identify the leaker. At one point, Kahraman put an audio file on his studio website and he wanted to showcase the team as the latest exclusive asset. The cryptic audio is now available on YouTube, but translated into Japanese poorly, as if it were done using a program like Google Translate. Sources believe that using Japanese is another way that Kahraman has chosen to lean toward the Kojima theories, even if he refutes them at the same time. Audio related to the “Cell Zero” episode Kahraman was turning to at the time, sources said, sounded like a Metal Gear impersonator.

But when it was shared online because people outside the group discovered it, Kahraman publicly claimed his site was hacked and he didn’t even know it was there. According to sources obtained by GameSpot, Kahraman said he wanted to find out who leaked it to the Redditor who ended up sharing it widely. One source said the blatant dishonesty had made things awkward in the group.

Kahraman refers to potential business partners as “cheaters,” including Nuare Studio, the veteran team he once planned to commission to make game art. According to sources, Kahraman used similar sentiments to describe various producers, including Geoff Keighley of Summer Games Fest and the team behind GamesRadar’s Future Games Show. Whenever a scheduled screening of a game is delayed (which happened a few times last year), sources say he’s quick to blame elsewhere.

He attempted a working and romantic relationship with a member of the group, promising to pay the studio for work on the game’s PlayStation Trophy-related art after the studio began earning revenue from the game’s distribution. He said in March 2022 that he planned to visit potential business and romantic partners in person when he was “free” in two months’ time, which the person believes means Kahraman is expected to complete the game’s prologue by then. One of several splits in the group chat also separated the two socially and professionally, and according to sources, they haven’t spoken since.

In another instance, he asked a member of the group to act as his shipping partner, storing some final physical copies of the game in the United States, in case Kahraman needed to travel from the Netherlands to the United States to find a storage facility himself. He offered to pay fans $1,500 for this, which he said would use some of the remaining money as “profit” to cover the fee, and set them up with a Blue Box Game Studios email address so they could communicate with Sony. He acknowledged that final details, including payment, are still to be determined. Days later, after Sony Interactive Entertainment sent fans a form to fill out, which included his own home address, Kahraman pulled the bizarre deal.

Strangely, the youngest person in the group was only 12 years old and was described by other members as loud and rude. At one point, as the group chatted at a PlayStation voice party, the young fan told another member to kill himself, while Kahraman remained silent. The other members comforted the man privately and expressed disappointment at Kahraman’s indifference.

The group has gone through several iterations since last fall, but has maintained one thing in common: it’s “toxic.” What started out as a place for eager fans to communicate with high-profile game developers has become more of a commitment to loyalty and secrecy to those who are behaving suspiciously. Sources say the members felt they should support the game and praised Kahraman between his Rainbow Six Siege rounds with Kahraman – who often invites some of them to play late into the night – or they could leave .

Some people who spoke to Esports.com.tnsaid they were afraid to comment on the game’s lack of progress or Kahraman’s erratic behavior because the aforementioned NDA had some members fill out and sign. The document asks for their private addresses along with other information. However, the lack of legal language in the copy of the NDA obtained by Esports.com.tnsuggests it was drafted and may not be binding. It also includes some grammatical errors similar to those made by Kahraman in his writings. Those who know the group recently decided to speak up as the material he shared has started leaking…
