Borderlands 3 to add full cross-play soon after PlayStation Holdout
That’s not surprising given what the studio has been saying recently, but Gearbox Software has now officially announced that Borderlands 3 will soon have full cross-play support for all platforms. This was confirmed during Gearbox’s PAX East keynote.
The full cross-play will arrive sometime this spring. With this update, PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, as well as players streaming through Stadia, can connect and play together.
Borderlands 3 will be fully cross-border this spring
Previously, all platforms except PlayStation supported cross-platform play for Borderlands 3. Just before the launch of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, a cross-platform game with full support for all platforms, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford said Borderlands 3 was “inevitable” to add this next.
Back when Borderlands 3 first launched in 2019, it was revealed that Sony had apparently blocked cross-platform play for reasons never disclosed. Sony hasn’t historically been the biggest proponent of cross-play.
During Epic’s trial with Apple, court documents show that Sony will require developers who add cross-play features to their games to pay royalties.
The documents show that Sony will calculate the fee based on the popularity of the PlayStation version of the game in question and how much money it makes on the PlayStation Network. Sony has now apparently changed its stance on cross-play, or in the case of Borderlands 3, struck some other deal.
In other Gearbox news, the company officially announced a new Borderlands game and acquired the co-developer of Call of Duty and PUBG.
