The other day, I remembered that Google used to archive newspapers. what happened? As it turns out, Google gave up, and as far as I can tell, it really preferred that I didn’t browse the rest of the newspaper archive (opens in a new tab) because it asked me if I was a bot on every page. Sometimes it stops loading the image of the question I’m reading and I have to navigate back in a new window to remind it I’m not a robot. Google: you It’s a robot!

After looking for a few Funny Meat Ads(opens in a new tab), I noticed that Computer World – a still going strong publication (opens in a new tab) – is a paper in the archives, with several issues from the late 1960s until its inception in 1971. I haven’t thought about the days of tapes and terminals in a long time, and it’s fun to go back in time, especially between IBM, Honeywell (“another computer company”) and others.

You can find the Computer World Archives (opens in a new tab) here (just be prepared to question your humanity often). Here are some highlights that I looked around for. For example, here’s a cartoonist imagining a computer that explains how to repair itself, this is how I repair each computer:

That’s a 20-year warranty on 1970 tapes because lawyers “won’t let them say forever”. Maybe they can, though: Graham Magnetics still exists(opens in a new tab) and will repurchase old computer tapes.

Sorry, “Inforex it” has never been a thing, Inforex.

In 1970, five cutting-edge CGI Santas cost $3.50.

Wait, what the hell? Fuck, 1970s computer world newspaper cartoonist John Mahoney, because I made a joke on your exact phone app usage for the next 48 years:
