Call of Duty Studios Hiring "open world role-playing game"

The studio best known for its action-packed shooter series Call of Duty seems to be exploring something else entirely. A job posting for Infinity Ward’s Polish branch is looking for a key position for what it describes as an “open-world RPG.”
location (via Charlie Intel), which appears to have been pulled from the job site for narrative directors. Details on the project are sparse, but it says it’s an unannounced AAA project and candidates will have experience with non-linear storytelling in open-world games.
This seems like a big departure from the Call of Duty series, which usually have a relatively linear story. It’s hard to say how deep the RPG’s roots go, though, as that could describe anything from a traditional turn-based game to something more like Ubisoft’s The Division. Although Infinity Ward is known for its realistic military shooter, it’s unclear if this will be set in the Call of Duty universe, or if it will happen in the real world.
Meanwhile, Infinity Ward’s next game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, will be released on October 28. We’ve gotten some details on the campaign and multiplayer, as well as some modes and features that will be missing from this year’s installment. We also recently learned that Warzone 2.0 will coexist with 1.0, with its own progression track.
This may be the last Call of Duty game released before Microsoft completes its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft has said it intends to continue releasing Call of Duty on the PlayStation platform after the acquisition.
