Diablo 4’s final class is Necromancer; 2023 release and new details revealed

Blizzard’s much-anticipated Diablo 4 shined at the Xbox/Bethesda showcase, giving us our first look at the fifth and final class, the Necromancer. However, the demo goes way beyond that, giving us a sneak peek at endgame content, open-world structure, and extensive character customization options.

The Necromancer returns from an early game in the series, revealed in an ominous CG trailer that shows the class will still revolve around developing the ability of undead minions to help you in battle. The Necromancer joins the barbarians, rogues, wizards, and druids in Diablo IV as the game’s five classes. After the initial trailer and some introductions from Diablo boss Rod Ferguson, we got to see the Diablo 4 game in action on the Xbox Series X.

This montage is accompanied by Blizzard staff outlining some of the new content and differences in Diablo 4, including character customization. While the basic outline of each course seems set in stone, we’ve seen variations you can make them into your own. Skin tones, hairstyles and colors, and other customization options are available, but you don’t seem to be able to change the physicality of the class from the default settings.

From there, we see a variety of abilities, including a sorceress similar to the one in Overwatch, in which your character freezes himself into an ice cube (but with the added effect of freezing all nearby objects on the screen) enemy). A barbarian can then be seen kicking an enemy off a ledge and jumping off the ledge into the area below. This could herald a new way of navigating the world, as previous games didn’t allow it.

In fact, Blizzard then started showing the open world, with a character quickly riding a horse through barren land. The game’s non-linear nature and “almost” 150 dungeons to explore are touted.

Strongholds are also new, described as “enemy territory you need to take back”. It might turn into a friendly town by taking care of enemies in specific locations. Blizzard says this allows you to have a “real impact” on the game world.

Like games like MMOs or Destiny 2, Diablo 4 has local events, which are essentially dynamic events that pop up as you explore the game world. These are optional events you’ll encounter as you play, and may involve fighting against large world bosses, which may require the assistance of other players to overthrow. The video shows a large horned creature emerging from a portal to fight multiple players, swinging its tail, hammer and a massive treasure chest wrapped in chains, occasionally popping out of the portal to reappear nearby.

In terms of multiplayer features, cross-play is enabled, allowing you to play with people on other platforms. Two-player local co-op is also available.

PvP is available here after it wasn’t in Diablo 3. Blizzard didn’t detail it, but certain areas let you play against other players. Those who do well will be marked as “champions” on the map, potentially attracting the attention of other players who can knock them down for loot. It remains to be seen whether there is any formal structure for PvP.

As far as the ending goes, Blizzard joked that, as you’d expect from a game like this, the end of the story is just the beginning of actually playing the game. It also claims to have something new every time you play. In addition to solving new dungeons or collecting new items, you can also work through the Paragon board, which, based on a very brief glimpse, involves a more complicated way of progressing than the Paragon system in Diablo 3.

While no exact release date for Diablo 4 was revealed, the segment ends with a 2023 release window, confirming that we can look forward to playing the new game next year. (Earlier at the Xbox showcase, it was stated that all of the games showcased will be released within the next 12 months, meaning the games should be released by June 2023.) Diablo 4 has previously been confirmed for PC, PS4 and Announced on Xbox One, and we now know that in addition to the Xbox Series X version on display, it will also be coming to PS5. There’s no question that the Xbox version is getting attention because it’s an Xbox event, even though Microsoft is currently trying to acquire Activision Blizzard. This could mean that Diablo 4 will finally launch on Xbox Game Pass, but that remains to be seen, assuming the deal does close.

While not mentioned on the show, the Diablo 4 beta is apparently on the way, and you can sign up now. For more on the game, check out our Diablo 4 interview with Blizzard, which dives into endgame, customization, and more.

This view of the game comes after the unsettling culture at Blizzard and Activision Blizzard as a whole was revealed. Blizzard recently announced that it had hired a culture chief to seek reforms after multiple employees were fired over a lawsuit alleging a widespread culture of sexual harassment and discrimination at Activision Blizzard.
