Diablo IV is taking important lessons from previous Diablo games, including how the game handles legendary items and its endgame Paragon progression system.

In a recent Esports.com.tninterview, Game Director Joe Shely and Diablo series general manager Rod Fergusson detailed the lessons Diablo IV has learned from previous entries in the series. Aside from the overall darker tone and appearance of Diablo IV compared to Diablo III, an important issue is how it handles legendary items.

The ability to extract energy from legendary items (previously announced in the Diablo IV quarterly update) and put them into other items “really unlocks the power of custom gear,” Shely said. Ferguson echoed this sentiment.

“It changed the game,” Ferguson said. “It’s true. We don’t talk about it enough. In the previous games, you would pick up a shield with this thing on it, and it was like, ‘You can summon two more skeleton mages.’ You’d say, ‘Oh, I have to keep this…my build needs these two extra mages. “Eventually your level will be over it and I don’t want to give up the shield. I will carry this shield even if it’s weak because I want the ability.

This is not the case in Diablo IV, players will be able to move legendary powers through an NPC called Occultist once an item with better stats is discovered. Players will also have the ability to turn rare items into legendary items.

“So being able to stick to your builds and be able to really customize your character by taking legendary powers, taking them out of one thing and infusing them into another, fundamentally changes the build system,” Ferguson said.

The ability to extract legendary powers and put them into new items appeared in the recently released Diablo Immortal, giving fans a look at how the system works in Diablo IV. Blizzard added a system to Diablo III in 2015 where players can use Kanai’s cube to extract and equip up to three legendary powers, but those powers themselves cannot be transferred to other items.

Another big change in Diablo IV is the Paragon system. Unlike Diablo III’s Paragon system, which can be upgraded almost infinitely, Diablo IV’s Paragon Board system will have 100 levels, according to Shely. Rather than simply raising the stats for each Paragon point as in Diablo III, players will make bigger decisions in Diablo IV’s endgame as to how to further improve their characters. Certain cards on the Paragon board may have an advantage over others, which means that even if two players play the same class, the skills and rewards they choose on the Paragon board may be very different.

“Each of these squares can add five powers or different abilities, or things that enhance your skills,” Ferguson said. “So you can click these different boards together and go your own way. That’s one of the things we really like about Diablo IV. Even Joe and I are both creating a barbarian, even if we both want to start with In the case of Whirlwind, we can still have completely different builds.”

Following the loss of its former director in 2021 amid various lawsuits and investigations alleging Activision Blizzard had a “fraternity boy” workplace culture, Diablo IV will be released in 2023 and will support a crossover between PC and consoles Games and cross-progress. Blizzard recently revealed new details about Diablo IV’s fifth and final release Necromancer.
