Doom Eternal Patch 6.66 Revision Adds New Accessibility Features


After dropping major update 6.66 in time for Halloween last year, Doom Eternal continues with smaller updates, this time targeting accessibility and quality of life. The new update is the second revision of version 6.66, adding text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities, as well as a new contrast filter.

With the addition of many new options, the accessibility menu will pop up when players load into Doom Eternal for the first time after installing update 6.66 Rev 2, prompting them to check their current settings.

Newly added options include a text-to-speech mode, which converts text entered into a player’s chat into synthesized speech. When it comes to voice profiles, players have a number of options to choose from, and they can be viewed in the accessibility menu. In Battle Mode 2.0 lobbies, all players can hear text-to-speech messages, but during matches, only Demon teammates can hear them. Incoming text-to-speech is also available, allowing incoming player messages to be read out in an analog voice.

Doom Eternal also added this feature in another way, allowing users to send messages in the chat window using speech-to-text. When players send messages using speech-to-text, they will appear yellow in the chat window and will only be visible to demon teammates. Players can also choose to turn on chat translation, which will automatically translate messages when they are sent if the receiving player’s system is set to a different language.

Another new accessibility feature is the Contrast Filter, which allows players to control how quickly the screen brightness changes. This feature is highly customizable when turned on, and the menu allows players to adjust sliders based on “Brightness Speed ​​Per Pixel” and “Full Screen Brightness Speed.”

The patch also includes a number of other quality of life changes, which can be read in the patch notes below. Switch players will have to wait for the new update, with update 6.66 Rev 2 arriving on the platform “later”.

Contrast filter

This option slows down the rate at which screen brightness changes in-game. Once enabled, it can be fine-tuned using the following sliders:

  • Brightness Speed ​​Per Pixel: Limits how fast the brightness of each pixel changes, such as in explosions or intense battle sequences
  • Full Screen Brightness Speed: Limits how fast the average brightness of the entire screen changes when changing rapidly
