Final Fantasy 16 won’t be an open-world game, but its Eikon combat will be unique

According to producer Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy XVI won’t be an open-world game, but its levels are inspired by recent “triple-A open-world RPGs.” In an interview, Yoshida explained that the development team felt limited by the idea of a single open-world space and instead focused on creating unique areas that were separate from each other.

“We found in our extensive user research that many younger generations of gamers have never played Final Fantasy or have any interest in the series,” Yoshida told IGN. “We’ve played a lot ourselves in order to create a game that not only excites and resonates with our core fans, but also a new generation, so yes, in [Final Fantasy XVI] You’ll find inspiration from recent AAA open-world RPGs.

According to Yoshida, this approach allows the story to span the entire world of Final Fantasy XVI, and thanks to the separate regional game design, players can experience the adventure “on a global scale.”

These environments will also be the stage for Eikon to fight Eikon, which Yoshida says will feel unique and not use the same system twice. “For example, maybe an Eikon versus Eikon fight, and if you have Eikon A versus Eikon B, that fight will be reminiscent of a 3D shooter,” Yoshida told Game Informer.

This is in line with the producer’s comments in GameSpot’s Final Fantasy XVI interview, in which Yoshida described one of the Eikon-to-Eikon fights as akin to a “professional wrestling match” and used the entire area as a battleground. “The battle itself goes through many different phases, many different phases, all of which change in real time. Players end up experiencing something massive, action-packed, and high-octane,” explains Yoshida.

Final Fantasy XVI is targeting a summer 2023 launch, exclusively on PS5. In other Final Fantasy XVI news following the PlayStation State of Play presentation’s recent trailer, the game’s developers include an all-star roster of Devil May Cry and Dragon Quest talent. You can also check out another interview with Yoshida where he explains why Final Fantasy XVI has a mature rating that only a few Square Enix RPGs come with.
