Game Pass helps Guardians of the Galaxy after slow start, Dev says

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. from developer Eidos-Montreal isn’t selling as well as publisher Square Enix might have wanted, but the game has clearly seen some uptick recently thanks to the arrival of Xbox Game Pass.
Senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas told Eurogamer that Guardians of the Galaxy was not perfect. “It can always be better,” Dugas said. “But was it a great ride? Did you play something different this year or last year from everything else? Was it worth your time on it? Honestly, from a gaming standpoint, I think yes. “
Dugas went on to say that the team did “everything” that could have made Guardians of the Galaxy a success in the marketplace, but it might not be enough. One problem, Dugas points out, may just be awareness. “Even if we say all ‘guardians’ [of the Galaxy] known”, it’s still a new IP [in the video game market]. Probably a lot of people didn’t even know the game was released, or they weren’t sure what it was,” Dugas said.
Senior Narrative Director Mary DeMarle mentioned that Game Pass is designed to help people discover games they might not otherwise have. “What I like right now is that people, especially with Games Pass, are playing it and sharing experiences,” DeMarle said. “We make games to touch people, we make games to engage audiences. It’s great that it found its audience, and it’s great that it keeps going.”
Earlier this year, Square Enix management said that initial sales of “Guardians of the Galaxy” were “below” the company’s expectations, but did not disclose any specific unit sales. Nonetheless, Square Enix said that sales of the game have grown since the launch of the sales plan in November 2021. “We intend to continue our efforts to expand sales to compensate for the game’s slow start,” Square Enix said.
Outside of the game series, Marvel is working on the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in May 2023. This will be writer-director James Gunn’s last Guardians film.
