Intel unveils its first discrete Arc GPU, but desktop graphics still have some way to go

Intel inadvertently leaks details of its flagship Arc GPU

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Intel recently released a video to demonstrate the capabilities of its arc control software. It was especially interesting, however, as the specs of an unknown discrete desktop GPU were shown for a few seconds during the demo.

Arc Control is the name of the software Intel will introduce to support Arc GPUs. Arc Control software includes GPU monitoring, which is the source of the information.

Information from 3DCenter’s Eagle Eye. At the 29th second of the video above, the software appears to be showing monitoring data from an as-yet-unreleased GPU. Presumably this information comes from a high-end discrete GPU, as the clocks and power consumption are too high to come from moving parts. The screenshot shows that the GPU utilization is over 99%, the GPU clock is 2250MHz, and the GPU power is 175W.

That 175W figure shows GPU power, not full board power, which suggests we’re looking at the top-of-the-line 200W+ model once power consumption of other components is factored in.

Another bit of information is the 1093MHz VRAM clock reading. This clock is equal to 17.5Gbps, which provides 560GB/sec at 256-bit bus width.

Of course, this is all speculation based on momentary monitoring. The software may just be glitchy and we’ve read too much into it. What is certain, though, is that the launch of Intel’s desktop Arc cards is getting closer. We now receive dumps of information almost daily. Having confirmed that Arc will support AV1 encoding and decoding, we have a good idea of โ€‹โ€‹what form the Arc mobile GPU will take, although real-world performance is still mostly unknown.

We still don’t have a firm release date, although it could be May-June. Interesting technologies like XeSS, Intel’s image upscaling algorithms, XMX AI acceleration, and new media engines take time to get right! If Intel wants to create a positive impact and win the hearts, minds and money of gamers, it needs to do it right from day one.

When it comes to the U.S. dollar, that’s the biggest unknown right now. The Arc’s competitiveness may depend on the attractiveness of its price tag. We don’t expect RTX 3090 Ti-level performance, so value is paramount. We hope this launch will be a success. A battle of three is better than a battle of two!
