Kingdom Hearts 4 revealed in series anniversary event

It appears that Tetsuya Nomura, the king of fashion at Square Enix: Kingdom Hearts 4, was announced during a special event celebrating the series’ 20th anniversary.

For those unaware, Kingdom Hearts is a long-running action RPG series that (famously) straddles the worlds of Disney and Final Fantasy, while also establishing its own setting and lore. The series was created by Tetsuya Nomura, character designer for several classic Final Fantasy games and director of the excellent Final Fantasy 7 Remake(Opens in a new tab).

The trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 shows series protagonist Sora waking up in a minimalist apartment in a modern city. He appears to be trapped in this “Quadratum” world and begins to fight a shadowy giant monster. The trailer ends with Donald Duck and Goofy searching for Sora in the dark abyss, before being accosted by an invisible enemy.

The trailer doesn’t include a release date, making it difficult to gauge the progress of Kingdom Hearts 4’s development. The third entry in the series had a similar trailer released in 2013 and hasn’t been released for the next six years, so Kingdom Hearts fans may have to wait a bit.

It’s unclear what Square Enix will do with the PC version of this entry. Kingdom Hearts has always been a PlayStation-centric franchise, and Kingdom Hearts 3 didn’t see a PC port until last year, when it released on the Epic Store alongside the vexing series compilation Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

Square Enix has been pursuing more PC ports of its games in recent years, with mixed results. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins arrive in an unfortunate state on PC, hampered by both limited graphics options (opens in a new tab) and frustrating performance issues (opens in a new tab) tab), and a serious lag issue with NieR: Automata that hasn’t been fixed in the four years since the game was released(opens in a new tab). One can hope that Kingdom Hearts 4 gets a better-performing, more timely PC port than we’ve seen in the past.
