Overwatch 2 ditches loot boxes, PvP roadmap promises new heroes and maps regularly

Following an appearance at the Xbox/Bethesda showcase earlier this week, Blizzard has now further detailed Overwatch 2 as part of its exclusive event. This includes plans to launch a PvP mode later this year, the removal of loot boxes, a roadmap for post-launch content – including new PvE content – and more.

As mentioned, the PvP component of Overwatch 2 will be released as a free-to-play game on October 4, 2022. This kicks off Season 1, which will feature all previously confirmed content – switch to 5v5, new characters Sojourn and Junker Queen (which you can watch in the new movie video below), new Push game mode, major balances Changes – but there are other additions too. One of them is a yet-to-be-revealed support character, as well as a new, customizable rare skin — Myth — and a Battle Pass. (You can learn more about the Mythic skin and all the new changes in our interview with Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller.)

The addition of the seasonal battle pass is a major turning point for Overwatch, as it will coincide with Blizzard’s abandonment of loot boxes. Despite being the way cosmetic items and rewards are distributed throughout Overwatch’s lifespan, the new game does away with them entirely, replacing them with a Battle Pass and a store where content can be purchased directly. Keller told GameSpot, “By losing these and moving to the Overwatch 2 store, it gives players real agency and choice to pursue what they want in the game.”

Overwatch 2 has a new season every nine weeks (each with its own Battle Pass), and a new hero is introduced every other season, which means a new hero every four to five months hero. Seasons that don’t add new characters will feature other types of content, such as maps and game modes. It also marks a major change for the future of Overwatch, as the erratic pace of major content updates has long been a sticking point for the community.

Season 2 launches on December 6 and includes tank heroes, maps, and more skins, including another Mythic skin. In 2023, we’ll get the long-awaited PvE mode, but details on it are still scarce.

Overwatch 2 will feature cross-progression, allowing players to bounce between game platforms and continue to progress and use all their unlocks. The new beta will launch on June 28.

All of these announcements come as Activision Blizzard is dealing with lawsuits and allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination. Microsoft is also trying to acquire publishers, bringing not only Overwatch and Diablo under the Xbox umbrella, but also Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and other franchises.
