Should I buy an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor?

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is our favorite six-core chip at PC Gamer, and it may soon be cheaper than ever. Red Team’s new wave of processors will land ahead of Black Friday(opens in a new tab) and Amazon Prime Day(opens in a new tab), so maybe we’ll also see big discounts on the excellent Ryzen 5 3600, too .

AMD and its retail partners are often keen to drop prices and add value to red-teamed CPUs and GPUs during free retail at the end of the year. With the Ryzen 5 3600 already offering such great value for money on a modern six-core processor for under $200, now might be a good time to grab it.

Small issues with AMD Zen 3 (opens in new tab) processors also need to be considered towards the end of 2020. While these will certainly improve upon the Zen 2 architecture in the Ryzen 5 3600, prices are sure to drop further for those Zen 2 chips still waiting for a good home in gaming PCs.

Gone are the days when quad-core processors ruled everything from entry-level to high-end. You can get more cores these days, and the Ryzen 5 3600 is a prime example.

The Ryzen 5 3600 is a six-core, 12-thread processor built with AMD’s innovative Zen 2 chiplet architecture. The chip will be boosted from a base clock frequency of 3.6GHz to 4.2GHz, ensuring adequate gaming speeds, and you’ll have plenty of cores to make up for any lack of productivity or creative applications. It’s the perfect blend of everything you need for a great all-around gaming PC, and it still holds a spot in our best gaming CPUs(opens in a new tab) guide.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 also comes with CPU cooler Wraith Stealth. It’s also a great kit, which means you can save money on another cooler build for your PC.

What are the alternatives to the Ryzen 5 3600?

In direct competition, the Intel Core i5 10400 is a good match for the AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The Intel chip is also a six-core 12-thread processor with a maximum turbo frequency of 4.3GHz, which can provide more or less the same gaming performance as the AMD chip. However, this 2.9GHz chip does lag the Ryzen 5 3600 in base frequency, so we’re still on the AMD team.

But even in AMD’s stack, the Ryzen 5 3600 has plenty of competition. On top of that is the Ryzen 5 3600X. It’s only slightly more expensive, but the clock speed has increased from 3.6GHz and 4.2GHz to 3.8GHz and 4.4GHz. It also comes with a slightly larger and more powerful cooler, the Wraith Spire.

There’s also the Ryzen 5 3600XT(opens in a new tab), another moderate clock speed boost for the Ryzen 5 3600 and 3600X. Worth watching.

At what price should I buy an AMD Ryzen 5 3600?

Even with AMD’s Zen 3 processors on the horizon, we still think the Ryzen 5 3600 is an excellent chip. It has everything you need to build a great gaming PC without holding your graphics card back from its full potential. Most importantly, it won’t break the bank.

There may be some wiggle room in the pricing of the Ryzen 5 3600 heading into Black Friday, so be sure to keep an eye on that. We’ve seen this chip drop to $165(opens in a new tab) in the past, and frankly, anything around that price point is well worth it.

Oh, and don’t forget there’s also an AM4 motherboard.
