Should I buy an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060?

Some of you are already enjoying Nvidia’s RTX 30 series, a replacement for a handful of graphics cards in the RTX 20 series. However, the RTX 2060(opens in a new tab) is not on that list, and no replacement for this entry-level RTX graphics card has been announced.

The RTX 2060 is in an odd spot in the stack, it’s an entry-level RTX card, but don’t forget that it has a range of mid-level and entry-level 16-series cards below it. At the very least, it’s a great 1080p graphics card in its own right, with the necessary features for moderate ray tracing and Nvidia’s AI-buffered supersampling technology, DLSS(opens in a new tab).

So, there are good reasons to look for an RTX 2060 this Black Friday (opens in a new tab), but should you buy this card now or wait for the inevitable RTX 3060? And, if so, what price should you be aware of? All this and more answers below.

What is Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060?

Nvidia RTX 2060 Specifications

release date – January 2019
graphics processor – Turing TU116
photolithography – 12nm
CUDA core – 1,920
base clock – 1,365MHz
boost clock – 1,680MHz
Memory Capacity – 6GB GDDR6
Suggested retail price – $299

Launched back in January 2019, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 joins the RTX 20-series list as the cheapest at $349. That price later dropped to $299 as AMD prepared its RX 5000-series cards to stay competitive and make way for the $399 RTX 2060 Super. Yes, the 20-series is a pretty tight lineup for Nvidia.

As for specs, the RTX 2060 features a TU106 GPU and 1,920 CUDA cores. It’s clocked at 1,680MHz as standard, although GPU boosts are known to easily surpass these operational limits, and it also comes with 6GB of GDDR6 memory and a fairly compact 192-bit memory bus.

It’s also the cheapest card to support Nvidia’s new and exotic RT Cores and Tensor Cores, used for ray tracing and AI acceleration, respectively. This means you can get in-game DLSS upgrades, which can help further boost the RTX 2060’s performance in certain games.

What are the alternatives to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060?

The current RTX 2060’s main competitor is AMD’s RX 5600 XT(opens in a new tab). A bit of pricing and BIOS shenanigans at launch meant the RX 5600 XT ended up pitting against the RTX 2060, and depending on the game you chose, they often fought back and a fourth deal. They’re also around $300 if you want a decent card with the fastest guts. Although you can buy the slightly slower RX 5600 XT for $10-30 less.

Unless you’re willing to spend a little more on the RTX 2060 Super(opens in a new tab), this card doesn’t have any other direct contenders right now, but Nvidia is undoubtedly about to announce the RTX 2060’s successor. We’re as sure as possible that Nvidia will finally launch the RTX 3060, although whether it will arrive on this day of the new year is another matter entirely. Since stock of all other RTX 30-series cards is hard to come by, we expect Nvidia to wait until the last minute to stock up on a lot of cards before releasing what is sure to be the most popular RTX 30-series card to the world.

Both the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080(opens in a new tab) offer significant core count and performance improvements over their 20-series counterparts, and we suspect the RTX 3060 will be a card worth the wait.

At what price should I buy an Nvidia RTX 2060?

This is a tricky one because I know I personally will at least wait for the RTX 3060 to be released before making up my mind. There’s a good chance this card will be significantly faster than the RTX 2060 and offer more powerful ray tracing, and it’s likely to be priced similarly.

There’s also a good chance that it will sell out immediately, and you’ll be waiting for 2021 for a chance to buy it.That’s why, if you’re looking for 1080p gaming, not extremely high refresh rates, and no others (I know, it’s a bit far-fetched) Then getting an RTX 2060 at a great price this Black Friday might be a reasonable option. If you can get one for less than $275 (for another time), you’ve got a great bargain.
