The Best Ergonomic Gear for PC Gaming

⌨️

If you’re a die-hard PC gamer who spends hours a day on the battlefield, it’s important to consider ergonomics in your gear choices. Whether you’re young or old, fit or otherwise, proper gear and posture are critical to preventing injuries and long-term health complications. This is something we PC Gamers have been thinking about all the time. Especially since we find ourselves sitting at our desks for work and play.

We conducted our own experiments with standing desks and even consulted ergonomic experts when choosing the best chair for PC gaming. It’s only natural to expand this topic to cover a wider range of ergonomic gear. So, we scoured the internet and tested various products to determine the best gear to offer PC gamers an ergonomic lifestyle.

Some of the great references and resources we sought for this included: esports physiotherapists at 1HP, ergonomic professionals at ErgoCanada, and experts in risk management and ergonomics at VSI. Learn more about how we made our choices at the end of this guide.

Steelcase Leap(opens in a new tab) is one of the most iconic modern chairs at a price to match its performance. Wirecutter named it the best office chair a few years ago, but we prefer the newer Steelcase Gesture for a number of reasons. Most importantly, holy smoke, it feels good. If your eyes are still paying for it, know this: As much as we love the other chairs we picked here, none of them are as comfortable as the Gesture.

In addition to hip comfort, Gesture offers all the adjustments you need to keep your back, neck, arms and shoulders in the best position for PC gaming. A $1,000 chair is unaffordable for most gamers, but feel like it’s a huge investment to save. If you spend most of your day in a chair, a quality chair with excellent ergonomics is definitely worth considering.

While we gave the Evodesk standing desk a rave review in 2016, a lot has changed since then. The standing desk market is growing with some new players in the game. Fortunately, you no longer have to spend $700 on a decent standing desk with automatic controls. The Autonomous SmartDesk 2 Home Edition, currently available for $299, offers all the ergonomics you need at an affordable price.

Do you need a standing desk for proper posture and ergonomic PC gaming? Absolutely not, but being able to switch between games while sitting and standing is great. You can easily adjust the height of the SmartDesk to suit any of your needs. The most important thing to consider is that your arms rest at a 90-degree angle to reduce stress on your body, especially your shoulders.

Another thing to consider is the distance and angle from the eye to the monitor. Having a desk with some depth helps, but an adjustable monitor stand makes this easier.

We’ve been using the Echogear monitor stand for a while now and are very happy with our purchase. They’re certainly not the cheapest option on the market, but the build quality of the Echogear mounts seems to be much better than others we’ve tested, and outlast the average mount for years. Equipped with dynamic gas springs, it can be easily adjusted in various directions, positions and angles.

Experts recommend keeping your monitor at arm’s length to reduce eye strain. Plus, keeping your eyes level with the upper quarter of the monitor is ideal for reducing stress on your upper neck. Both of these things can be easily achieved with an adjustable monitor stand. For users with dual monitor setups, the Echogear stand can also be used on both arms(opens in a new tab).

Microsoft’s signature wave-like ergonomic keyboard has been a staple for as long as we can remember. This is because they promote a relaxed, neutral wrist and forearm position, which promotes proper circulation and reduces stress. Ergonomic keyboards like this have been around for decades, but it’s only recently that we’ve started seeing options for PC gamers.

The Kinesis Freestyle Edge Split has to be a favorite choice for PC gamers. It features Cherry MX mechanical switches and a split design that lets you adjust the position of the two separate halves to your liking. It also has recognizable gaming features like LED backlighting, n-key rollover, 1ms response time, and programmable macro keys.

Our only complaint about the board is its price tag. For $180, we can expect features like dedicated media keys and RGB lighting. Kinesis also sells a separate lift kit that allows you to tilt and create a “tent” between the two keyboard halves. That should probably be included in the price. Regardless, if you’re looking for the best of the best, the Kinesis Freestyle Edge Split is a great option, allowing you to adjust the perfect ergonomic posture for gaming and typing.

We should start by saying that this mouse, while our personal favorite, may not be the best choice for everyone else.As every expert we could talk to emphasized, the mouse is nowhere near as important how do you use itThere are plenty of mice on the market that are called “ergonomic” mice, but it’s very common in the field that those awkwardly shaped vertical mice don’t necessarily offer any big advantages.

The most important consideration when it comes to mouse ergonomics is the neutral position of the wrist. That is, a position where the wrist is not tilted or bent does not place unnecessary stress on the joints and muscles. For this, finding the right mouse for your shape is crucial. For us, the G502 offers a comfortable shape and weight, making it easier to maintain a neutral position.

The Logitech G502 isn’t too big or too small, and it offers an adjustable weight system that’s perfect for all kinds of gamers. Most of us in the office are fans of this shape, but others may prefer a lighter mouse or ambidextrous shape. We recommend trying different mice to find the shape that works best for you.

Choose the most ergonomic gear

When we first set out to find the best chair for PC gaming, we knew it was important to seek help from experts in the ergonomics field. As PC gamers and office workers, we spend most of our day in chairs. When we wonder if ditching the chair entirely is the right thing to do, the thought must have crossed our minds.

We interviewed Melissa Afterman, MS CPE’s Senior Principal Ergonomics Specialist at VSI Risk Management & Ergonomics, Inc., who specializes in workstation setups. “Chairs are still ok, of course,” she said. “Yes, we know sitting for too long is bad for you. The truth is, standing for too long is just as bad for you, so the answer is exercise. Take breaks, get up and move at least every hour, or move Change your posture from standing to sitting so you don’t stand for too long.”

This brings us to a very important discovery of ergonomics: No amount of ergonomic gear alone can correct bad habits and bad posture. It certainly helps make things easier, but getting it right is crucial. 1HP physical therapists who work with esports professionals have released a great guide to PC gaming posture.

When choosing the best ergonomic gear above, we made sure to consider products that help achieve neutral wrist positioning, optimal monitor and chair heights, and promote healthy shoulder and arm placement. We also considered features that appeal to gamers as well as overall value. Our goal is to find the best overall product that reduces stress while providing benefits to all types of PC gamers.
