The Borderlands franchise is all about teaming up with your friends and traveling through a huge world full of color psychology. To take them down, you’ll gain access to tons of weapons and abilities that will allow you to co-create some remarkable first-person shooters. Borderlands 3 works with friends at its best, so split-screen co-op seems like a no-brainer for the franchise. With an expansive, humorous story, four different character classes, and a bunch of side content to keep you busy, there’s plenty of Borderlands 3 to cover with your friends.

The Call of Duty genre is still the dominant force in the first-person shooter scene, with plenty of multiplayer. But with Black Ops – Cold War, Activision and developer Infinity Ward brought back the ability to jump from the couch into the fray. The game supports split-screen multiplayer in both its competitive deathmatch arena and zombie mode. You can play with two players locally, but if you and your split-screen companion both have PlayStation Network accounts, you can play split-screen online, allowing you to mix the best of local and online multiplayer.

racing games can only be so Good when you’re forced to play against computer opponents. Playing against otherwise unpredictable humans makes racing so exciting, and Dirt 5 offers the chance to play against online opponents, as well as against whoever sits next to you. Dirt 5 supports up to four players in split-screen, so you can go head-to-head on the track, or team up as a racing team and take down computer races through the game’s career mode.

Fortnite may have become some sort of cultural giant, but it’s still, at its core, a great online gaming experience. Not only can you play Fortnite online on PS5, but the game also supports split-screen play, so you can play a battle royale game with friends in the same room against other fighters on the island. Note that both players need a Fortnite account to play – but the game is free, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Developer Hazelight’s second game continues the studio’s focus on creating story-driven co-op experiences. From that standpoint, it takes two to be a pretty impressive one – you’ll play divorce-ready parents Cody and May. With their daughter wanting to see them reconcile, the couple unexpectedly turned into little dolls, sending them on a long journey through the garage, backyard and house, during which they learned to communicate and appreciate each other again. All gameplay in It Takes Two fits into this theme, with cooperative players solving puzzles and problems together. Cody and May each have different capabilities and tools, so teamwork is critical. With a lengthy story and lots of innovative two-player gameplay, It Takes Two is an essential couch co-op experience.

One of the coolest competitive multiplayer games out there is Rocket League, where you play soccer — but at the same time drive a car with rocket boosters so you can fly through the air. It’s an absurd and chaotic game, best played with friends on a team. Rocket League supports split-screen play, allowing you to create local matches, but you can also bring your split-screen companions online in the game’s quickplay mode without the need for multiple PSN accounts. But whether online or on the couch, Rocket League should definitely be on your playlist for games with friends.

At first glance, Stardew Valley is an RPG farming simulator, but it’s a game that packs a lot more, as you make a life for yourself in its world. You’ll spend time developing your farm and expanding your life in the world, including activities like mining and farming, but really, it’s about discovering life in your small town and interacting with the characters you find there game. There’s a lot to do as you create your farm and make your town great, and on PS5, you can play split-screen and share your work with a partner.

In the 2D adventure game Chicory, you step into a black and white world after discovering that you have a magical brush. Unraveling the mystery of what happened to the owner of the brush is an important part of the game, but using the brush to change the world at will is another. You can draw everything in Chicory, and better yet, you can collaborate with friends to realize your vision together. It’s a cool way to experience the game on the same couch, allowing you to immerse yourself in Chicory’s story while taking some time to get creative.

If American football isn’t your thing, there’s a FIFA franchise that offers fast-paced football games with similar online and local matches. FIFA 21 gives you the opportunity to play on the same team with another friend from the couch or via an internet connection. You can play against another two-player team, or if you prefer, play together for a season. All of FIFA 21’s modes are sports co-op, so you have plenty of options.

Haven, a game dedicated to a couple exploring a strange new planet together, is a great co-op adventure experience. In Haven, you and your partner play as Kay and Yu, who have fled their homes and landed on another planet. With both characters wearing cool gravity boots, much of the game is focused on fast-paced, fluid exploration, while combat is turn-based, giving you time to speak up and coordinate effectively.

The Madden franchise has been a great multiplayer offering for years, and Madden 22 continues that tradition on PS5. The game offers online and local multiplayer, so you can either play against your friends (or people you don’t know) or play alongside them on the same team. In fact, Madden 22 lets you do both, supporting 6v6 online play, allowing you to team up with friends and try to take on human opponents. If that doesn’t excite you, it’s always possible to team up with AI opponents and build your franchise through a season.

This open-world survival game about building things is deceptively easy to pick up and complex, and players have spent millions of hours exploring its world, invading the Nether, and building all kinds of interesting things in it.
