Orcs and VFX are at the heart of the Lord of the Rings movies, but they’ll play a bigger role in the upcoming Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power — and they’ll be the real deal, according to IGN’s new preview much more.

“I love Orcs,” said Jamie Wilson, head of the show’s prosthetics department. “I love creature design, so I’m excited to talk about this stuff. JD and Patrick, show hosts, their first page [show] The Bible is about orcs. They have a real passion for them, they love practical prosthetics and designs, they feel like they need to explore because this is the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of the Third Age [and the existing Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films]. It is important for them to see them as their own culture and to explore the world independently on two legs. “

Overall, the producers tried to bring the Orcs to a more three-dimensional life than they did in the movie, where they were no longer a character but an overwhelming hindrance to the protagonist.

“We spent a lot of time talking about what it means to be an orc in the Second Age,” said executive producer Lindsey Weber. “It feels like they’re going to look different, part of the wilder, more primitive Second Age Middle-earth, closer to where the First Age ended. They weren’t organized into armies when we met them, they It’s “a little bit more spread out, they’ve been cleaning up. So it’s just a different period of their whole story. “

As part of that, they’re looking to broaden their ideas about what it means to be an orc and what an orc looks like.

“There are some female orcs that I really like,” Webb said. “But there’s one orc in particular, who’s very, very big and strong, and he had a particularly good fight with one of our elven characters, and I doubt they’ll be, or hopefully, a fan favorite.”

While even the average Lord of the Rings fan should recognize Orcs, they’ll look a little different.

“It’s kind of like these are the baby versions,” Wilson explained. “They’re not actually babies, they’re coming out of the dark. So it’s early days. If you go to the movies in the past about them, you’ll see them, they’ve taken a lot of damage in the fight… It’s kind of like “

The Lord of the Rings: Ring of Power is currently scheduled to air on Prime Video on September 2, 2022. There’s no word yet on whether we’ll find out if the Orcs have restaurants and menus to make the references in the original trilogy meaningful.
