CD Projekt Red is using Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 to power The Witcher 4, but the developer’s partnership with Epic is actually a multi-year agreement, with the company working closely with Epic on the technology. As part of Epic’s State of Unreal event today, the developers at CD Projekt Red discussed why they ditched their in-house engine, RedEngine, in favor of Unreal Engine 5 for The Witcher 4.

CDPR CTO Pawel Zawodny said the Unreal Engine 5 update helped develop the open-world game the Polish studio is known for, a major selling point. “This opens a new chapter for us, and we’re really excited to see how our experience building open-world games combines with Epic’s engineering capabilities,” Zawodny said.

Meanwhile, game director Jason Slama said Open-world game development presents a set of challenges compared to more linear games, and Unreal Engine 5 will help CDPR address that.

“The probability of things that could go wrong, or scenarios that you have to think about, is much higher than in a linear game,” Slama said. “Players can go in any direction they want; in theory, they can process content in any order they want. To be truly encapsulated that means you need a really stable environment where you can make changes with a high degree of confidence , which is not going to break in 1,600 other places.”

Developers at CDPR also noted that thanks to Unreal Engine 5, iteration and prototyping is faster than ever, giving developers time to test new ideas with greater confidence.

Despite this close collaboration, The Witcher 4 — or whatever the game is ultimately called — won’t be exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC. The game director has promised no staff crunch during The Witcher 4’s development. Meanwhile, the medallion in the Witcher 4 trailer has been confirmed as a lynx.

Unreal Engine 5 was released to the public today, April 5th, along with two free sample projects. Over 85 game studios have transitioned to Unreal Engine 5, including Crystal Dynamics and its new Tomb Raider.
