World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic will receive a “fresh start” server release, allowing new players to join without being left behind by players who have already reached the highest level on existing servers.

Blizzard made the announcement via a post on the Burning Crusade Classic forum. These new servers will come with the arrival of the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch, and will let players start at level 1 but have access to new abilities and talent trees introduced as part of Wrath of the Lich King. A freshly booted server is not an option for the game’s release, The Burning Crusade Classic.

“In addition to fulfilling the requests we’ve been hearing from players for a long time, we expect a lot of new classic players to join us for the first time in Wrath of the Lich King, some of whom may be concerned that they’ll feel left behind,” Blizzard’s forum The post reads. “The New Beginning field should give these players the opportunity to feel as if they’re on an equal playing field with everyone else.”

There are some rules when crafting characters on new servers. Players will not be able to use paid character boosts for at least 90 days, and newly started servers will not be eligible to receive transfers from other servers during the same period. Players interested in playing as a death knight in Wrath of the Lich King Classic will need to reach character level 55 on the new server before they can create a death knight character on the same server. On other existing Wrath of the Lich King servers, this is not a requirement, and players can craft a death knight on any server without requiring a level 55 character.

According to Blizzard, the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch will last between two and six weeks, meaning that new players rolling on the new server won’t have a lot of time to reach the top level of Northrend before being able to venture into the new world. When the pre-patch does arrive, all existing Burning Crusade Classic servers will be automatically converted to Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

Blizzard hopes the new Start server will be an opportunity for a more balanced faction experience, something the game has been grappling with lately in Warcraft Classic and the game’s recent Shadowlands expansion, with more players opting for the Horde over the Alliance. This has led to things like same-aligned PvP battlegrounds in the Burning Crusade classic and cross-alignment groups in modern World of Warcraft.

Wrath of the Lich King Classic doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in 2022.
