According to creative officer Takashi Iizuka, new tracks arranged by composer Jun Senoue have replaced Sonic 3’s soundtrack, as much of the game’s original score is in an unusable state.

“When we go back and try to recreate all these games from over 30 years ago, you get a lot of old data that you can’t really use,” Iizuka told Eurogamer. “Music was one of them – we had to dig up old DAT tapes to get all these in-game music, and Jun Senoue went in and had to recreate in a modern format the music they could take Sonic 3 and Knuckles as the final product.”

Back in 1993, Sega allegedly pulled the plug on Jackson after allegations of child abuse came to light, though rumors suggested that what he made remained in the original version of the game. In the years following Sonic 3’s release, Naka has been tight-lipped whenever rumors have been raised, such as in a 2009 interview with Sonic Stadium, where he jokingly sidestepped questions from the website.

Besides Sonic Origins, you can expect a few other games starring the Sega mascot. Sonic Frontiers gives hedgehogs a wide “open area” to play, and has recently shown off more of its exploration and quick fights with a recent video deep dive.
