Brave devs remind players to report toxic behavior

The developers of competitive FPS game Valorant are reminding players to use an in-game reporting tool when they encounter toxic behavior, after a prominent YouTube streamer went viral for abusive tirade against female team members.

Earlier this week, a clip from streaming IShowSpeed, which has more than 7 million subscribers, caught the attention of Full Squad Gaming co-founder Jake Lucky. In the clip, IShowSpeed gets knocked down and throws a tantrum in a corner of Valorant, eventually breaking out at a female member of his team in a series of misogynistic slurs. “I understand now what the Valorant cohort is so incredibly toxic,” lucky writes When he posted the clip to Twitter. “One of the most popular streamers on YouTube IShowSpeed says such crap with nothing but compliments and laughter. Trash is a whack.”

IShowSpeed since then issued an apology, but has been banned from Valorant and all other Riot games. As Kotaku reported, IShowSpeed said he “had a bad day” and had been dealing with racist insults himself. However, he said: “There is no excuse, I was wrong. I’m not trying to justify it.”

Lucky’s tweet garnered over 29,000 retweets and over 171,000 likes. Valorant game producer Sara Dadafshar replied, telling Lucky (and his followers) that Speed had been banned.

“This was a huge mistake, we simply don’t want players like this in our community,” she wrote. “I go ahead and permanently ban this player from Valorant and all other Riot games.”

Dadafshar encourages players to continue reporting bad behavior and use Riot’s in-game reporting tool so that community managers can take action.

Before you move on to your next game, please remind you that while extensive publicity here or elsewhere can be brought to our attention, the only way we can take action on disruptive behavior in the game is to file an official report. So if you see something – report it!

The Valorant team responded to her statement on the game’s official Twitter. “Before you move on to your next game, please remind you that while widespread awareness here and other channels can be brought to our attention, the only way we can take action on disruptive behavior in games is to file an official report. So, if you Saw something – report it!”

Last year, Riot announced that it would begin storing player voice communication data in Valorant to verify reports of toxic behavior.
