Bungie finally takes down AFK farming in Destiny 2’s ‘Thrallway’

I don’t think AFK farming is unique to the Destiny 2 community, but when it comes to taking the path of least resistance with XP and loot, Guardians are serial criminals.

Bungie’s latest week focuses primarily on the upcoming remake of Gambit mode, as well as a preview of next week’s patch notes for the Witch Queen expansion. But hidden beneath it all is an impending change to the Shattered Throne dungeon that will help combat the game’s most notorious AFK farm: “The Thrallway.”

“Fixed an issue where Shadow Servants in the Shattered Throne were inadvertently giving investment bonuses such as Shimmer, Memento, and XP,” TWAB said. “As players start crafting weapons and leveling up their Season Pass on February 22nd, we want to make sure that in-game rewards are earned by playing and completing events, bounties, or patrolling with friends while defeating Dark Minions.”

There’s no shadow of that statement, but it amounts to Bungie’s belated suppression of a long-standing problem in Destiny 2. Thrallway is so called because it is an area of the dungeon that will spawn infinite Thralls for players to slaughter. So every week on PC LFG, you can find players swapping Thrallway checkpoints. It’s a great place to stop your brain from working until you’ve done the heavy lifting like Strange Catalyst.

However, some players are also AFKing in Thrallway, using macros or rigging controllers for movement and spam attacks to avoid getting kicked for inactivity. This is a simple but effective way to hone your Season Pass rank and Artifact XP. If you’ve seen a four-figure season-ranked Keeper in the tower, chances are they’ve spent many nights at Thrallway.

Ever heard of the Thrallway xp farm? Players take advantage of the Reactive Pulse mod and certain subclass abilities to sit down in thrallway encounters in Shattered Throne. About 30xp per kill, allowing them to go from 0 to 100 season pass in a week or less, AFK. (1/3)March 8, 2021

The patch will also adjust the knockback effect of “boss stomps”, which “should reduce the number of deaths from being bumped into objects”. It will be a less impactful change if you pardon the pun, but our global brand manager and resident Destiny animal Tim Clark is clearly looking forward to it, saying: “It would be nice to go into the new century without being physically smashed. “

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be available on February 22nd. If you haven’t seen it, here’s The Witch Queen launch trailer, and if you’re new to the game and wondering what the big deal is, we’ve got a lore book that spells it all out – back to the hive the beginning of.
