A new Witcher game is in the works

CDPR confirms wizard medal is lynx

Update March 23, 2022: In an email to PC Gamer, Momot said the nod was not meant to be sarcastic, sarcastic, or dismissive. “I can confirm that the medal is actually in the shape of a lynx,” he said.

The original story follows.

CD Projekt dropped yesterday’s big video game news in the form of confirmation that The Witcher 4 (it’s not an official title, but we’re sticking with it for now) is in development. Details are practically non-existent—in fact, the main focus of the announcement is CD Projekt’s partnership deal with Epic Games—but the accompanying image is quite interesting: a wizard medallion, half-buried in snow.

This led to immediate speculation about the new game. Medallion is not of the wolf school, which is a clear indication that Geralt will not be the protagonist of the new game. But which school it came from is less clear. My first impression was of cat school: it’s a very feline face, and Ciri is famous for wearing the cat school medal in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. She’s also directly connected to Hoarfrost, which is the main Witcher 3 plot point I won’t spoil, but you can read it here if you want.

But then others pointed out that the medallion looks more like that of the Lynx School, a new school established after the events of The Witcher 3 by members of the Cat School and Geralt’s cranky friend Lambert. An obvious post-Witcher 3 setup would be great for the follow-up game, and the ears are definitely more visible in the teaser images than those of the standard cat medallion. The only problem: Lynx School is fan fiction, not based on wizard novels or video games.

That made Lynx’s proposal seem almost impossible — until CD Projekt Red’s head of global community Marcin Momot tweeted:

“This,” if you can’t see it for some reason, is actor and comedian Kenan Thompson nodding enthusiastically in response to the image someone said “looks like a lynx.”

Now I don’t know what to believe. Has Momot, who was able to know what happened, confirmed that the new game will follow the Tmall School storyline? Or did he just admit that the medallion did look like a lynx? Did CD Projekt tweak the Lynx medallion design for Cat School to more clearly differentiate it from the Wolf? Or could this be just the first of multiple medallion designs we’ll see before the proper Witcher 4 unveiling — whenever it happens — to remind everyone that the Witcher world is big and a lot going on?

I wouldn’t put too much stock in Momot’s tweet as a cornerstone of the next Witcher game – he wouldn’t just tweet, would he? — but at the same time, the basic facts of the issue cannot be ignored: someone said “Lynx School,” CD Projekt Red’s top community rep said “yes.”
