Charities call for better mental health support for players

A UK mental health charity has called for better support for video game fans. Over a three-week period, the Mental Health Foundation studied 24 UK players aged 18 to 60 and produced a report telling developers and producers how they could do it.

The research examines the positive and negative effects of gaming on player well-being, and concludes with five recommendations for game developers and publishers to keep in mind: Address harmful and toxic behavior in communities, ensure meaningful inclusion and representation to address discrimination questions, embedding mental health content, raising awareness about mental health more broadly, and helping people play more consciously through design features.

“It’s clear from our research that people believe gaming is good for their mental health,” said Kathryn Seymour, head of research at the Mental Health Foundation. “However, there are some dark sides. We also found that the impact of gaming on mental health varies from person to person and is a very personal thing.

“That’s why we’re making these five recommendations to the industry. We think there’s a lot that game companies can do for players who buy their products. Be more proactive about addressing toxic communities, addressing discrimination, providing links to mental health resources, and thinking about game design. helped.”
