With Amazon Prime With Day PC deals approaching, prices have already started to fall.
Choosing the best option for a new panel can be difficult. Do you prefer a “competitive” monitor with an ultra-high refresh rate, or do you prefer to put resolution first? Most of the time you have to choose, especially if you want to choose a monitor that supports 4K and high dynamic range. And then, of course, your variable sync options: if you have an Nvidia GPU, you might want to limit your search to the best G-Sync monitors. If you have an AMD graphics card, you are looking for a Freesync-capable graphics card. Then, of course, there are dedicated panels: curved and/or ultrawide monitors are great for certain groups of people and certain types of games, but certainly not for everyone.
You won’t always find the perfect option when you’re sticking with the price you want to move, but there’s almost always some way to “push” your system.

In our eyes, the top-of-the-line gaming monitor right now is the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q. This 27-inch monitor has a 2560×1440 resolution — which we currently think is the sweet spot for high-end gaming — and it offers more pixels than 1080p without being as demanding as a 4K panel. This results in games that look very sharp at 27 inches, but the display doesn’t degrade the GPU’s performance. Beyond that, refresh rates higher than 60Hz are still possible – something that’s not possible on current 4K monitors.
Much like its main competitor, the Acer Predator XB271HU, the PG279Q is an IPS panel that boosts its refresh rate to 165Hz. (It’s worth noting, though the difference between 144Hz and 165Hz is negligible.) Inputs include an HDMI 1.4 and a DisplayPort 1.2a, and the monitor also features Nvidia’s G-Sync technology for variable refresh rates (assuming you use is an Nvidia graphics card). However, if you’re an AMD user, you won’t benefit from G-Sync and should probably consider a FreeSync monitor.
Unfortunately, and predictably, the biggest downside to this great monitor is its price, which isn’t great at the moment, although you can find it for under $800/£700. However, we think a monitor is a good investment in your PC setup, and you never want to buy something that has to be replaced within two years; ideally, you want to buy a great monitor that will last five years Left and right will remain strong. There are 144Hz IPS monitors similar to the Asus offering, but using FreeSync instead of G-Sync. However, the ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q is the best option, and it’s worth all the goodies.

The Acer Predator X27 is an absolutely fantastic monitor, with crisp 4K output, great HDR display, and G-Sync, and High refresh rate. Combining an IPS panel with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz when overclocked, the Acer Predator X27 is breathtaking. However, Acer claims that its VisionCare technology will help prevent eye strain during long gaming sessions. G-Sync allows the monitor to refresh at a variable rate, rather than being locked to its maximum value (144Hz in this case), and it syncs with your in-game frame rate, eliminating any micro-cards when the frame rate doesn’t exactly match Stuttering or screen tearing perfectly meets the high demands of 144Hz.
The Acer Predator X27 has several connection ports on its left and right sides: two USB 3.0 ports on the side; two USB 3.0 ports on the back, as well as HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. So despite the high asking price, the X27 is definitely worth considering, especially if it gets an extra discount on its holiday sale.

For those AMD users who want a FreeSync monitor, there’s no better monitor than the Asus MG279Q. It’s a 1440p IPS screen that can refresh at up to 144Hz, but since it uses open FreeSync technology instead of G-Sync, it’s not too expensive.
The base design makes the monitor sturdy while also allowing plenty of tilt, swivel, and height adjustments, and the bezels are very thin, which is a good thing for a 27-inch monitor that already takes up a bit of space. It also has a light anti-gloss coating: some older IPS monitors can get too heavy on the image quality, but it worked just fine on the MG279Q.
Thanks to the excellent IPS screen, the colors look great even from off-angles and the contrast is excellent. Elsewhere, the ability to support multiple inputs provides great flexibility, especially for those who might want to add a second system such as a console. This is thanks to the presence of an internal scaler – one of the main differences between G-Sync and FreeSync. No other IPS FreeSync monitor can match the MG279Q in terms of specs, it’s an amazing monitor and certainly the best option for those with AMD graphics cards.
