Company of Heroes 3 has some impressive building destruction features
As development continues on Company of Heroes 3, developer Relic Entertainment has shared some details on the most important part of the game: getting things to flourish. While the first two Company of Heroes games feature impressive elements of building destruction that remind players of the warzone they’re in, the third game is looking to amplify the destruction that will occur in each battle.
“People will first notice how real the CoH 3 destruction feels,” lead environmental artist Patrick Lopetrone wrote in a forum post. “While CoH 1 and CoH 2 contain damage ahead of time, they don’t really have the benefit of physical shards. In CoH 3, we wreck the entire building, resulting in true geometric shard shards, not in FX shards Use Past. What makes our fragments look more realistic is that they retain the same texture as the healthy mesh.
According to Lopetrone, physics is also applied to buildings to give the game a satisfying sense of destruction, and this realism is being developed further by ensuring that all buildings use multiple layers of materials in their construction. In practice, using the power of Relic’s proprietary Essence Engine, a building hit by a cannon will explode in brick, mortar and plaster. The buildings would still take considerable damage, but eventually they would collapse into piles of rubble.
In addition to the havoc players can wreak on the Mediterranean countryside, Company of Heroes 3 will feature tactical pauses in single-player to make critical decisions — think they’re billions at a breather — to flank maneuvers , infantry breakout mechanics, and dynamic maps that create sandbox-style gameplay. Company of Heroes 3 doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but a pre-alpha preview has been made.
