Walt Disney Games and Kabam Entertainment are collaborating on Disney’s Mirrorverse, an action role-playing game that will launch on mobile devices on June 23, bringing together characters from Disney and Pixar for an all-new adventure.

The Mirrorverse is set in an alternate universe where enemies known as Fractured are trying to break the Stellar Mirror and use its magic. Some of Disney and Pixar’s most famous characters — including heroes like Monsters Inc.’s Sully and villains like Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent — are magnified by the magic generated by the mirror to protect it, turning them into fighters fighting the Broken. Guardians swarmed in droves.

These Guardians are reimaginings of iconic Disney characters, giving them new powers and abilities. For example, Beauty and the Beast is a powerful witch wielding a staff powered by the cursed rose of Beast Castle, while the aforementioned Sully is a melee fighter wearing armor made from the doors of the screaming floor tank. 40 Guardians will be unlocked at launch, and more will be released through monthly content releases after launch.

Disney’s Mirrorverse brings a fresh perspective to some of the most famous characters in history, turning them into warriors of great power and magic. Esports.com.tnrecently spoke with two key members of the game’s development team, Kabam’s Executive Producer Mark Raham and Walt Disney Games’ VP of Creative Will Rosas, about how this new Disney game is different from anything we’ve played before. chat.

We took the time to discuss the thought process behind the Mirrorverse, especially the radical departure from what Disney fans see as the norm. Character design, building a whole new story from scratch, and how far Kabam will go into Disney’s coffers in future releases were all discussed, and I clearly understood in the interview why this new look at Disney would be a welcome one.

GameSpot: A lot of the character designs we see are “out of the box” for the characters they portray. How much freedom has Kabam given to designing characters in this way, and to what extent is working with Disney on those designs?

Mark Raham: The collaboration with Disney is amazing. One of the things we decided early on was that the amazing evolution of these characters that everyone knew had to be rooted in authenticity. We did a lot of testing around this concept early on, and one thing that kept feeding us was: if you keep the core of that character, if it’s still there in the Mirrorverse’s battle-ready evolved version, then people are willing to take it and love it it.

What was really exciting about developing this game was working hand in hand with Will and our partners at Disney to really understand these core essences. Who are these people? What is important to them? Compared to the characters’ original films, the Mirrorverse is a world where the forces of light and darkness are exaggerated to catastrophic proportions. What do they do in these special cases? How will they adapt to support their beliefs and those they care about? That part was an amazing process.

Will Rosas: Correspondingly, the cooperation with Kabam is excellent. We are huge fans of their game Marvel: Contest of Champions and they do a fantastic job with the execution, action and storytelling. We’re excited to work with these guys again.

As far as Mark is concerned, if you were to bring these people into this high-stakes world, how would you improve their design to “fit the moment”? This is a big deal. You don’t necessarily want to bring them into the world. They must be ready for this moment. That’s where we’ve been able to improve their designs, which are still rooted in authenticity, and that’s what makes it seem plausible. That’s what convinces players that this is going to happen, and that idea has given us support from the rest of the organization.

From a design standpoint, it makes sense that there are more obstacles to turning Belle into a sorceress than making Sulley an armored tank made from his factory doors.Belle is more of a mental leap as a magician, but after seeing her in the game, it makes perfect sense.

Rosas: You found something very important to the Mirrorverse there, which is storytelling. Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do; we already have these ideas around these characters, but we have to have some backstory to present them. You’ll see some of this through each character’s in-game bio, and for Belle in particular, we’ve made some choices. The world of the Mirrorverse has changed, amplified by so-called “stellar magic” and created a different path that turns Belle into her sorceress.

The presentations we saw made references to each character, such as the stone in Belle’s magic wand being the rose in Beauty and the Beast, or the part of Sully’s armor with the door number written on the cloth. Obviously, there are little things like this on all characters, so how challenging is it to research what could be the perfect reference for these character designs? Is there an attempt to balance references that may be too obscure with references that everyone knows?

Raham: We felt like there had to be those layers, right? Ideally, people who are familiar with the movies because they’ve seen them on Disney+ or played with action figures will recognize some familiar faces, while true, die-hard Disney fans will find something in the lore every time. All roles are directed against them, and for some roles there may even be more than one.

Is there a reference you are particularly proud of?

Raham: It’s hard to pick just one, they’re like my kids. I’m very proud of what the character team between Kabam and Disney is building. One of my favorite games – the one I’m playing right now – is Maui from Moana. In the Mirrorverse, “Stellar Magic” changes Maui’s relationship to the sun and Earth, giving him different powers. In the game, he is an amazing tank and can also protect those around him. He has these radiant tattoos that unleash magic from them, and his talents can be customized in such a way to provide armor to teammates in battle. His story is great, his visuals are great, and he’s very useful in dungeon mode.

Rapunzel is another great person, she’s actually one of our Prime Guardians. She’s a formidable melee fighter that’s really easy to understand for new users: button, swing medieval combat frying pan. She has a nice, satisfying sense of movement, and her magical hair can add healing in a pinch. Her dialogue is sharp, she’s funny and curious about the world, and it feels like the real Tangled Rapunzel is on an adventure with you.

Will each hero have different outfits/skins? Other mobile games have used them in the past, and as you mentioned Maui, we now love the idea of ​​playing with Shark Head Maui.

Raham: I’ll get back to the authenticity of the question; it’s very important to us that each of these Guardians is rooted in the truth about who they are and what they’ve been through. So I don’t know if something like a magic hat would make sense in our game. We want this to be a game that people will really get into emotionally for years to come, and to that end, we want these characters to really understand place, story and purpose. Their visual representation will be driven by what’s happening in this world and what’s going to happen in the future.

In terms of customization and personal expression, we’re going to focus more on the player aspect rather than the characters in the game with icons and decorations, mixing and matching to say “this is who I am as a player”.

You mentioned that you want players to be able to enjoy the game for years. Obviously, a lot of Disney content can be extracted from it. How deep is Kabam willing (or allowed) to dig into the vault to find character ideas? Are there any restrictions on what you can extract from it?

Raham: From Kabam’s perspective, we’re definitely not going to exhaust the pantheon of Disney content. What’s great about the world we’ve built is that we have access to a treasure trove of Disney classics, from iconic animated films to live-action films and even to Pixar films and short films, and we have reason to bring it all together in a way that’s really good Great.

In terms of who and how, even looking at the release list, you’ll see expected franchise blockbusters like Elsa, Jack Sparrow, and these types of characters. However, you will also find that our players tell us that the characters resonate with them. Scrooge McDuck is a good example. Scrooge is in the game because players say, “Scrooge is a human, and we want to play with him in this game.” The possibility to dig deeper and find things that mean a lot to our players gives us a lot of opportunity.

Rosas: I totally agree with this, and I would also say that as Disney and Pixar continue to add new content through the movies and Disney+, there is also an opportunity there to introduce new characters to the world. We really have an infinite number of characters to choose from, and there will be a mix of fan favorites, new characters, names that the team loves, and more. It’s really exciting and I think there’s going to be a lot of great characters coming out.

Speaking of these endless possibilities, can the Mirrorverse expand to other Disney-owned properties like Marvel and Star Wars, or will it be strictly focused on the aforementioned Disney and Pixar?

Raham: Currently we want to focus on solving this problem and already have a a lot of work with. I want to make sure we don’t get too distracted, because it’s the little details that count.

Rosas: I’ll add that while we’re very grateful to our Marvel and Star Wars fans, I think the Mirrorverse has Disney and Pixar characters in the game that you’ve never seen before, and I think we want to continue down that path. Whenever you see a new character, you will be amazed and delighted by how that character looks. What is the Guardian version of that character? We’re really excited when we think about it, there’s an unexpected quality to the way these characters are represented in the game. For example, if you’re a big fan of Mickey the Magician, wait until you see our version – he’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The world of Disney and Pixar is so rich, we’re going to really get to know that.

Thoughts on the Mirrorverse itself: Did it start with Kabam and then present to Disney, or was it built from the ground up as a collaboration on a brand new Disney-themed project?

Raham: We previously had a great relationship with Disney, thanks to Marvel: Contest of Champions. We have known each other for a long time and enjoy working together. The race has been going on for over six years, and we’re hitting much of the planet every day. We hope to have the opportunity to do this with new stories, new properties, and work with our partners to do so.
