Double Fine talks about its games being turned into movies

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer commented on the possibility of one of the studio’s franchises being made into a movie, which doesn’t sound like something the studio wants to do. In an interview with IGN, Schaefer said he’s thrown a lot of pitches — and eaten a lot of free lunches — but so far, he’s turned down every single one.
“We often come across people who say, ‘Hey, can we make this into a movie?’ But, you know, it’s usually just a distraction,” Schaeffer said. “I think gaming is what I really care about, what I love to do, and what I think is fun. It comes out every once in a while, but it never becomes anything. I eat a lot of free lunch Hollywood.”
Double Fine’s Psychonauts series in particular has potential beyond video games, Schafer admits. But Shaffer said, “Games are way cooler than movies and TV, so it’s peaking.”
“Warcraft” and “Moon” director Duncan Jones recently talked about his desire to make a movie based on Double Fine’s Full Throttle. Jones even wrote an entire script. Shaffer read it, but ultimately didn’t believe it was going anywhere. “It’s exciting,” Schaeffer said. “It’s going to be fun to work with Duncan, but, you know, LA and Hollywood, they’re just a maelstrom of lunch.”
Although there are no plans to make a Double Fine movie in the near future, there are many video game projects in the pipeline. Just recently, reports said it needed two that could be adapted into a movie or show, and HBO is working on a “The Last of Us” TV series. Additionally, the long-awaited Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg is set to hit theaters this month.
Schafer also recently talked about what Double Fine might be doing next after Psychonauts 2, which sounds like it won’t be Psychonauts 3.
