Dragon Ball, Elden Ring publishers put $130 million into ‘IP metaverse’

Bandai Namco has unveiled plans to invest 15 billion yen ($130 million) to create a virtual world of intellectual property, in what is undoubtedly a series of flashy corporate buzzwords. The project is a key part of the publisher’s mid-term plan for the next three years, with three goals: to connect with fans through intellectual property, while increasing the value of those brands, and strengthening the company’s position in all aspects of the world (thanks, VGC) ).

Bandai Namco wants to develop a metaverse for each IP as a new framework for connecting fans. “In this IP virtual world, we look forward to the virtual space that will allow customers to enjoy a wide range of entertainment on the IP axis, as well as a framework that leverages Bandai Namco’s unique strengths to blend physical products and venues with digital elements.”

Once these communities are established, publishers hope to create “deep, broad, multifaceted connections” that last for a long time. “In this way, we will strive to maximize the IP value in the medium to long term,” the developer added.

Besides NFTs, the metaverse is another buzzword in game development right now. It broadly captures the concept of connected virtual reality spaces where users can interact with each other.

Bandai Namco hasn’t provided much about what intellectual property it will use. While the company does release games like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dark Souls, many of the intellectual property is licensed rather than owned. However, who knows, maybe one day you’ll hang out with Goku and Sif the bad wolf on Kai Wang’s little planet.

In other news, Bandai Namco has now pulled the anime fighting game Jump Force from the digital store. Last year, the publisher revealed its intentions to do so, and the online service will shut down next August.

The fighting game features a series of fighters from Bandai Namco’s released roster of games, from Dragon Ball’s Goku to Yu-Gi-Oh’s Yugi Muto. Note that unranked online battles will continue to be available, but otherwise, this will be a largely separate event.
