Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s plot twist is genius

⌨️

Fans of Final Fantasy VII look forward to the 2020 remake that faithfully retells the original story. Square Enix has other plans as well: Final Fantasy VII Remake’s final chapters deviate from the original’s ending, leaving a profound impact on the storyline and causing the ire of some players. “It’s an escape,” they complained; “just a cheap way to expand the narrative”. They were wrong. The new ending is completely inspired and perfectly reimagines a historic title.

Before we dive into all the details, we should point out that there are some Major plot spoilers for FF7 and its remake Ahead – you have been warned. If you’re still hesitant, you can read our Final Fantasy VII Remake review here.

The plot of Final Fantasy VII Remake largely follows that of the original anime game, until the team escapes from Shinra headquarters. But along the way, there have been some signs that this time is different, with some force at work we’ve never seen before: Whispers of Fate.

When the Sector 7 plate collapsed, these ghostly figures appeared, slowing Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith so they couldn’t save the area’s inhabitants. Later, Sephiroth impaled Barrett in the chest, killing him – which certainly wouldn’t happen in the original – and to correct the disagreement, Barrett was then resurrected by these cryptic whispers.

Once you beat Whispers and Sephiroth, it’s a little different. Avalanche members who died in the original were injured, but somehow still alive. However, the biggest twist comes at the end of the game. In the FF7 prequel Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Cloud’s best friend Zach Fell is shot by Shinra soldiers, leaving Cloud with his Buster sword. But in the remake universe, Zac instead defeated all the last soldiers and carried Cloud on his shoulders to Midgar, surviving what he never imagined.

When we play games, we are reshaping history

This suggests that something has fundamentally changed. The previous timeline has been broken, leaving an open path for the future – Square Enix is free to take the next part of the remake anywhere.

So the “remake” in the title hides a second meaning: when we play the game, we’re actually remaking history. It’s no surprise that the twist is controversial. The original Final Fantasy VII is widely regarded as one of the best stories in video games, so why screw it up? But this subversion is as cleverly written as the original game. By changing things, FF7R director Tetsuya Nomura and his team were able to maintain the integrity and quality of FF7 while offering a fresh take on its story.

We already know where the original Final Fantasy VII storyline is going, all the way to the Advent Children movies and beyond, so why not try something completely out of place? If Final Fantasy and Nomura are known for one thing, it’s their experimental approach to storytelling: the way they craft complex emotional narratives that break down complex concepts and characters.

Remake takes players on a new journey with nostalgia

The remake takes players on a new journey with the nostalgia for the original plot and the desire to relive a beloved story. As you defeat the Whisperers of Fate, who are trying to make everything the same as before, you slowly begin to open up a world of possibilities for the future.

That’s not necessarily a good thing for the protagonist, though, as it also benefits Sephiroth. In the original Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth eventually dies. He never sees his plans come to fruition, and the Sephiroth you meet in FF7R seems to know the fate of the original.

No one can predict what will happen next. FF7 ends with the destruction of destiny itself, opening the door for the next part of the remake – anything can happen. Aerith might not die, Tifa might die in her place, or the ending might be much happier than in the original game, which saw the team emerge victorious but lose key members along the way.

Or, everything could go wrong and our heroes could find themselves in a darker place than if they just stuck to the script. However, isn’t this distorted beauty? Now that anything is possible, we are once again invested in the fate of these characters. As we look forward to the journey ahead, wherever it takes us, I am satisfied that this story is in safe hands.
