Flight Simulator sim update 9 adds new supersonic effects

Simulation update IX for Microsoft Flight Simulator was released today, and it adds some gorgeous new effects for certain types of high-speed flight. The update also includes bug fixes for weather, specific aircraft, and general stability, which should make your flight in the simulator game smoother once installed.

Some of the coolest additions in Simulation Update IX are the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, a supersonic twin-engine fighter jet used by the US Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Spanish Air Force. Sim update IX adds some new effects to fighter jets – as you approach the speed of sound, you’ll see the unique cone of vapor created by the shockwaves created by the plane’s super-velocity as it moves through moist air.

You’ll also find that G-forces trigger vortices from the Super Hornet’s wingtips and wings, and that flying at high speeds near surfaces covered in snow, dust, or water creates new visual effects. Just make sure you’re ready to pull up quickly.

Of course, not everything in this simulation update is about Super Hornet. The patch adds a new Spotlight Event landing challenge where you must land a Cessna 172 Skyhawk at Kingston Airport, Nevada – a small remote airstrip at the foot of the arid Toiyabe Mountains.

Sim update IX also switches Microsoft Flight Simulator to Azure neural text-to-speech technology, which should lead to more natural conversations between air traffic controllers and other AI-controlled entities on the radio.

The patch notes contain all the changes, which include numerous tweaks and enhancements to individual aircraft.
