Forspoken on PC takes two seconds to load when using DirectStorage

Microsoft recently released the DirectStorage API to game developers, giving them access to the same technology that makes quick recovery one of the best features of the Xbox Series X|S console. In theory, DirectStorage promises lightning-fast loading of PC games, and in practice it looks like it could be a massive upgrade on the platform.

As spotted by PC Gamer, footage from the upcoming RPG Forspoken shows the game loading in an astounding 1.9 seconds on an M.2 SSD. With the SATA SSD, that time increased to 3.7 seconds, still impressive, while on the regular SATA SSD, the game was playable in 21.5 seconds. The scenario used to demonstrate these speeds consists of about 20,000 files with a total size of 4.5GB, the DirectStorage API has a file IO speed of 4,839MB/s, while the Win32 API on the same drive is clocked at 2,826 MB/s.

One caveat though, as the technology isn’t exactly plug-and-play software. Developer Luminous Productions had to optimize it for Forspoken, and the studio did note that improvements could be made to prevent data bottlenecks in graphics decompression. Microsoft is working on fine-tuning the technology and improving it in the future.

As for how it works, DirectStorage allows the GPU to communicate directly with the SSD so games and textures can be loaded without first checking the CPU and main memory. This has the potential to enable the near-instantaneous game loading that has become a hallmark of the current generation of console games such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Doom Eternal on PS5 and Xbox’s respective SSDs The blazingly fast Speed Series X|S console is shown.

Forspoken is becoming a nifty showcase of new technology, as it also incorporates AMD’s new FidelityFX super-resolution technology into its designs. The game does tell a story for its protagonist, Frey Holland, though, and it was revealed in more detail this week ahead of its upcoming arrival on PC and PS5 this May.
