Fortnite season 2 has raised $50 million for Ukraine relief

The developer announced that Epic Games and Microsoft have raised more than $50 million to support humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine. As previously mentioned, Epic Games will be donating all proceeds from Fortnite to charity between March 20 and April 3 to support the post-Russian-invaded country.

On a related note, Xbox will be donating its net proceeds from Fortnite during this period to support charities in the Ukrainian people. It is understood that Xbox will take a platform fee of around 30%, which could be a big change given the size and status of Fortnite. Epic’s blog post indicates that the $36 million is the sum of the funds donated by Epic and Xbox.

Epic and Microsoft are donating the funds to UNICEF, Direct Relief, the World Food Programme and UNHCR. The groups provided emergency aid by distributing food and water as well as water and other essentials. The money will also be used to provide legal aid and housing. Epic Games says it will be adding more charitable partners in the coming weeks.

Epic clarified that it is providing funds to these charities as soon as possible. This means that Epic donates the funds even before they reach Epic’s own bank account. “We don’t wait for actual funds to come in from our platform and payment partners, which can take a while depending on how transactions are processed. When transactions are reported, we will log them and send funds to humanitarians A rescue group will be organized within days,” Epic said.

The funds come from the purchase of V-Bucks, Fortnite Crew, gifted Battle Passes, and cosmetics. Any V-Bucks cards or cosmetic DLC purchased from retail stores between March 20th and April 3rd will also be counted and donated to charity.

When Epic says it will donate 100% of the sale proceeds, that means the total purchase price less taxes, refunds, returns, revocations and third-party platform fees. For Xbox, the wording is similar: Microsoft will donate its cut gross proceeds after returns and refunds, billing costs, bandwidth costs, operating costs and taxes.

Ukraine has asked PlayStation, Xbox and eSports organizations to stop supporting Russia following the attack. Several movie studios have stopped releasing new films in the country, and Apple no longer sells any products in the country.
