Fortnite’s ‘No Buildings’ Mode Will Be Permanent, Data Miners Say

Epic recently shut down the build in Fortnite’s default mode, a change explained by a convoluted story trailer that ends with Doctor Strange’s unexpected appearance. As Jody said at the time, “Video games!” The change was meant to be a temporary novelty, although we predict that if build-less mode is popular enough, it could become a permanent option.

So we’re not surprised that multiple data miners found evidence that Epic actually plans to keep the no-build option full-time. TweaBR said on March 21, “The ‘No Builds’ LTM that will be available in 8 days will be called ‘Solo-No Build Battle Royale’.” Duos, Trios and Squad will also have a build-free mode.

A few days later, HypeX confirmed this claim, saying there was a “separate no-building mode that they could enable at any time” after the LTM ended, and that most loading screen prompts had been changed to “in a building-enabled mode.”

Seems like Epic is planning to keep the no-build mode, here are some signs/proves 🔥 – They can always enable a separate no-build mode after the limited time event is over – They changed most of the loading screen prompts to “Enable buildings in mode…  …” pic.twitter.com/SvQ5SkbCitMarch 23, 2022

We’ve said that removing a core element of the game seemed like a high-risk move when a building-free mode was announced, but Fortnite has relied heavily on the power of reinvention for years. It’s a battle royale, the same as PUBG, Apex Legends and Warzone, but it’s a completely different experience – where any number of Marvel superheroes, Olympians and/or hip-hop stars can jump in and kick ass, and move on without anyone raising an eyebrow. Changing it up again (and, ironically, to be more like its genre mate) actually fits the Fortnite formula pretty well, and it looks like it’s going well: before the recent leak, a lot of people on Reddit had expressed hope for some kind of no-nonsense Build mode will be a permanent part of the game.

Unsurprisingly, a representative for Epic Games declined to comment.
