Gigabyte’s Uranium mouse offers 70 hours of wireless gaming

Gigabyte’s new wireless mouse, the Aivia Uranium, uses a compact reactor that looks a bit like a pair of rechargeable AA batteries and claims to offer up to 70 hours of uninterrupted wireless gaming.

Gigabyte isn’t known for their gaming peripherals, but they love their latest Aivia keyboard – the awesome Osmium – and I think they may have turned the corner.

Aivia Uranium is using some smart power design to offload some energy consuming activities to the wireless receiver, allowing the wireless laser mouse to run for as long as possible on a single charge. The Ghost Macro Station connects to your machine and acts as a receiver and charging station for the mouse. It’s also where the mouse stores all its memory, and where macros are stored and edited.

This means less actual technology in the mouse itself, so as not to drain the battery from moving the cursor around the screen for something that doesn’t really matter. As a result, gaming battery life is 70 hours, and it only takes about three hours to fully charge again. Even so, you won’t be disturbed for long: you can unplug the retractable mini-USB charging cable from the receiver and continue charging when the battery eventually fails.

Aesthetically, its angular black styling won’t let the world shine, but it packs a decent amount of functionality and feels comfortable. Now the standard multi-DPI switching and programmable keys (ten) are present, but unfortunately it uses a previous generation laser sensor. The 5,600 DPI laser sensor is a far cry from the 8,200 DPI marvels I’ve seen in products like Corsair’s Vengeance M65 or Shogun Bros’ Ballista Mk1. Whether this makes a big relative difference in mouse feel in games, I’ll see when we get a sample.

Fingers crossed, we’re also getting one of the updated Osmium keyboards set to use Cherry MX Brown switches instead of the louder Reds. Um.
