PUBG: Battlegrounds – the game formerly known as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – still holds the record for the largest number of concurrent players registered on Steam. It’s still one of the biggest games on the platform, but even after free-to-play, it’s nowhere near the heights of its early days. However, this is just a matter of opinion, as the newly launched game has reached over 500,000 concurrent players.

SteamDB shows that PUBG has a peak of 668,706 concurrent players after the free-to-play launch today. This makes it the second most popular game on Steam today (after Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), and would make it the sixth most popular Steam game of all time, behind New World, Cyberpunk 2077, Dota 2, CS:GO, and, uh, itself.

PUBG peaked at 3,257,248 players shortly after its 1.0 release in January 2018. This remains an astronomical, seemingly untouchable record on Steam. Only three other Steam games — Cyberpunk, Dota, and CS:GO — have crossed the 1 million player count, and PUBG is the only game to break the 2 million mark, let alone three.

Of course, these numbers only take into account players on Steam, and with PUBG: Battlegrounds now all over consoles, and PUBG Mobile’s continued focus on iOS and Android, the number of players actually committed to the battle royale game is sure to be much, much higher.

In the PUBG realm, though, things haven’t been smooth sailing. The launch of free-to-play games has brought a larger percentage of negative Steam reviews than ever before, as many players worry that cheaters are now more prominent, and some are upset that games they paid for are now free.
