Although Microsoft offers free upgrades, there are still some unofficial versions of Windows 11 that come with a watermark. Microsoft’s latest preview builds suggest that gaming PCs with unsupported hardware will soon suffer the same fate.

The Verge found that the Windows 11 Release Preview build (22000.588) added “System requirements not met, go to settings to learn more”. Watermark to unapproved rigs. While the message may not seem as intrusive as the company’s long-unregistered stigma, it would appear on millions of PCs using known workarounds.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft didn’t mention the new watermark in its Windows Insider notes, but users like Alien Leopard Evidence of its existence was shared on Twitter. If the disapproval notice does come packaged with Windows 11’s next update, it will affect any builds that pair the OS with CPUs older than Intel’s Coffee Lake or AMD’s Zen+ and Zen 2 series.

Windows 11’s popularity as a gaming platform may be growing, but some of Microsoft’s decisions could hurt its reputation. Recently, the computing giant accidentally pushed a Windows File Explorer banner ad to some users as part of an internal test. The company also plans to force an internet connection when installing the operating system.

However, if it wants to prevent Valve’s SteamOS from becoming a success for the Steam platform, it has to be careful with unwanted features and annoying additions to its experience.
