Intel: Alder Lake CPU bending issue is a feature, not a bug

Intel Alder Lake processors top the list of the best gaming CPUs you can buy today, but reports that these chips appear to bend when they fit into their LGA 1700 sockets are causing concern among gaming PC enthusiasts. Now, when it comes to Tom’s Hardware, Intel doesn’t seem to be concerned, saying the bend is “to be expected.”

The company’s internal data claims Intel Alder Lake The processor “may be slightly deformed after being installed in the socket,” and said “this slight deformation is to be expected and will not cause the processor to operate out of specification.” That said, the company “is working with our Partners and customers work together to investigate any potential issues” and will provide any necessary guidance “as appropriate”.

While there’s really no evidence that Intel’s Alder Lake chips perform any worse than their advertised specs, there are other issues here. For example, intrepid hobbyists have discovered that it is possible to improve the contact between the CPU chip and the cooler through modifications of varying complexity, increasing the temperature by up to 5°C. These mods range from simple washers to the hacksaw motherboard itself. Of course, Intel discourages these pursuits and warns that any modifications could void the product warranty.

Also, as Tom’s Hardware highlights, there are concerns about motherboard reliability. The blue team claims that the apparent deflection in Intel’s Alder Lake chips doesn’t cause the motherboard to bend, but instead points to the load holding the CPU in the socket. However, the company hasn’t said whether this force will cause long-term damage to arguably the most important component of your system.

By looking at the video above, you can see the bending happening in Intel Alder Lake CPUs, and we hope there’s really nothing to worry about here. It remains to be seen whether Intel will take steps to address this issue in its upcoming Raptor Lake processors, although it says it has no plans to change its design.
