Judge approves Activision Blizzard’s first lawsuit settlement

🖥️

Activision Blizzard has been the subject of multiple lawsuits from government regulators, alleging that the company has been sexist and sexually harassed for years. In September, the company and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced an $18 million settlement. Today, U.S. District Judge Dale Fischer approved the settlement.

In a previously released summary of the settlement, Activision Blizzard will pay claimants $18 million in what, according to The Washington Post, is the second-largest sexual harassment settlement negotiated by the EEOC. Claimants will be required to opt-in to receive compensation, and in doing so, they will have to forego participation in California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) discrimination for harassment, retaliation, or pregnancy. If an individual has a specific claim that is not covered by the EEOC lawsuit, they can still be part of the DFEH lawsuit.

The California DFEH filed the lawsuit in July, months before the EEOC lawsuit. After announcing preliminary plans for a settlement between the EEOC and Activision Blizzard, the DFEH objected, saying the settlement could harm its own interests.

“I’m going to sign a consent order, which will close this case,” Judge Fischer told DFEH representatives at today’s hearing, according to The Washington Post. “You’ve filed a motion. Your request is out of date.” Ninth Circuit talk.”

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry. You can read about all the progress so far in this regularly updated explainer article.

A trial between DFEH and Activision Blizzard is scheduled for February 2023.
