Konami Says Castlevania Won’t Run on Steam Deck, and That’s Wrong

Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was the punch that made Metroidvania such a beloved game format in the first place, but you could argue that both series are equally good on the GBA – especially when it comes to “vania” . Since there’s a great collection of portable Castlevania on Steam, you might think it’s a perfect fit for the Steam deck.

But as Konami said in the Steam message for Castlevania Premium Collection: “Before purchasing this software, please note that it is not playable on Steam Deck as it does not support SteamOS.” (The same message will also appear in Castlevania on the Steam page of the Anniversary Collection.)

The problem is that Konami seems absolutely wrong at this point. As the folks at GamingOnLinux have shown, the Castlevania series launches well on the Steam platform thanks to Steam’s built-in Proton compatibility feature. The game also plays just fine, and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with saving states.

Neither series has been officially rated as Steam Deck compatibility by Valve, but it looks like you might get lucky with some portable Castlevania, whatever.

Old games never die, nor should they.
