This presents a great opportunity for Gearbox writers to see the entire work as a lesson in improv. Like the original DLC, Tiny Tina is also prone to major modifications mid-session. The whole environment can change right before your eyes in technically impressive and fascinating ways, depending on the fantasies her imagination brings her. This makes the experience quite different from the mainline game, as does the quasi-Skyrim-style quests. Thematically, it’s all excellent.

The class system and accompanying character abilities, companions, spells, and melee attacks work together to create something different from the usual Borderlands shootout. Prototypes have been used before – companion building, sacrificing health for damage, basic shooting bro, infinity – but their implementation here is very interesting.

The only real blunder that I can’t go back to is the Overworld. This is different from other open world games, but instead has a series of minimaps connected by the description of the tabletop game itself. You walk around the set with a head-shaking version of your character, accepting or dodging random encounters as if it were a JRPG, then making it to your next mission location and back into the game world. It felt like a compromise, like a solution to a big problem that the team didn’t have the time or resources to solve. It only really becomes a problem when you find yourself under-leveled on the next proper mission and have to go through some tedious random encounters. Thankfully, these moments don’t come around very often.

It was still firing at screaming enemies in the familiar camp. It’s still watching numbers jump out of their brains. It’s still about salivating in the shower with the color-coded goodies spit out of them when they die. But it’s also a game world that I really like spending time in, somewhere between Skyrim and Rick and Morty, a place to relax, indulge in stacking abilities, catch up with your buddies, and little Tina for You’re ready for some fresh crap to explore.
