Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course DLC: Release Date, Tracks and Everything We Know
🖥️
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the most popular games on the Nintendo Switch, and after five years of racing around every other Switch game on the market, it’s getting a ton of DLC. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass will add more courses to the game, rolling out in six waves by the end of 2023. Here’s what we know about the new DLC, including its initial release date, confirmed tracks, and how to buy it.
What is the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Accelerator Pass?
Borrowing from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s successful Fighter Passes, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass offers fans regular content drops that expand on the already popular game. However, unlike the Fighter Pass, this content cannot be purchased a la carte. The Booster Pass is the only way to access new tracks, and it gives you access to all new tracks as they are released.
The pass will add 48 tracks over six content drops lasting until the end of 2023. Each wave will consist of eight dishes, which will be divided into two cups from the first course. These courses are remastered versions of tracks throughout the series’ history, from the Super NES original to the latest mobile version of Mario Kart Tour.
The first wave will arrive on March 18, 2022. A release date for the rest of the wave has yet to be detailed.
How much does the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass cost?
There are several options for purchasing the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass. A separate purchase of the Booster Pass is $25, which will give you access to all released tracks. But that’s not your only option.
The Booster Pass is also included in the Nintendo Switch Online+ expansion pack. Spend $50 a year and get other Switch Online benefits as well. It comes with all the usual Switch Online perks like online play, NES and SNES games, and exclusives like Tetris 99. The expansion pack adds extra perks like N64 and Genesis games, as well as the Animal Crossing Happy Home Paradise DLC.
The most expensive option is the Nintendo Switch Online+ Expansion Pack Family Plan, which costs $80 a year. This will allow you to get all the expansion pack perks listed above and be able to share them with your entire homegroup (up to 8 people).
What does the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass include?
The Booster Pass includes all 48 remastered tracks and will be released in six waves of eight. Nintendo hasn’t announced all of the upcoming tracks – again, similar to the mysterious launch of Smash Bros. Fighter Passes – but we do know it will be a mix of tracks throughout the franchise’s history. This includes all seven previous console Mario Kart games, as well as the mobile version of Mario Kart Tour. There are many tracks to choose from.
The original Mario Kart 8 Deluxe release included 48 tracks – 32 regular tracks and an additional 16 tracks that were added as DLC when the game was released on the Nintendo Wii U. MK8 Deluxe includes all of these DLC add-ons right from the start. This means that once all Booster Pass tracks are released, the MK8 will effectively double in size, from 48 tracks to 96 tracks.
So far, we only know the first wave trajectory, which you can find below. The Mario Kart Tour is the most represented, with three out of eight tracks represented. The rest of the selection covers everything from N64, Wii, GBA, DS, and 3DS, each represented by a track.

Why choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?
You might be wondering: why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Why now? These are fair questions. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a 5-year-old port of the Wii U game, which itself is 8 years old. It hasn’t gotten many updates since its release, and nothing has been updated in that time.
First, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch by a huge margin. It has sold 43 million copies as of December 31, 2021, according to Nintendo’s sales figures. That’s roughly a 40% add-on rate, given that the same data shows Nintendo has sold 103 million Nintendo Switch units. It makes sense that Nintendo would want to capitalize on its success.
Another factor could be the success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Fighters Pass model shows that Nintendo can maintain interest in the game with a steady stream of new content. It’s probably no coincidence that Mario Kart’s Booster Pass follows a nearly identical pattern, with a single purchase paying for months of content before much of it is revealed.
Finally, Nintendo is using the Booster Pass to boost the value of its Nintendo Switch+ expansion pack offering. The service level is significantly higher than its standard online service, and Nintendo appears to be dropping DLC as an added bonus for its popular games. It kicked off this trend by including a DLC expansion for Animal Crossing: New Horizons — especially its second– Bestsellers – Mario Kart continues this trend. We may eventually see other games include their own content in expansion packs on a semi-regular basis.
The first wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Pass content will be released on March 18th.
