Modder says Elden Ring could be vulnerable to the same security flaws as Dark Souls

According to a report by VGC, the security bug that took the Dark Souls series offline on PC for more than a week could affect Elden Ring. Dark Souls: Remastered and Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 players are all vulnerable to one or more remote code execution vulnerabilities that could allow malicious hackers to take control of their PCs. A modder who reported the vulnerability believes that Elden Ring may face the same problem because it uses the same networking code.

“I had a chance to see the code from closed network testing and can already tell you there are a lot of crashes and bugs in Elden Ring’s network code, it’s actually exactly the same as in Dark Souls 3! So, I suspect it’s from the Dark Souls 3 cheaters will take five minutes to port their scripts to Elden Ring and make launch day a hellish sight,” said Luke Yui, creator of Blue Sentinel, a fix for Dark Souls. 100+ cheat mods in Souls 3.

According to Elden Ring’s EULA, the game uses EasyAntiCheat. Another person who discovered the latest exploit told VGC that EasyAntiCheat will only set a higher barrier of entry for cheaters – the bug in the game’s code is still there for anyone breaking EasyAntiCheat, they said.

Beyond taking the game’s PvP servers offline, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have said little about how they addressed the security breach. We reached out to the publisher about this, but have yet to hear back.

Luke Yui said they found a similar issue with Dark Souls 3 in 2019 and reported it to Bandai Namco. While the publishers have fixed some minor issues, most of them remain unresolved.

When Dark Souls 3 launched in 2016, it included an issue called “item injection” where players would push hacked items into other players’ inventories, permanently destroying their other items. Souls games have a long history, with PvP exploits and hacks extending all the way to 2009’s Demon’s Souls. Elden Ring, coming later this month, is a joy to play in peace — hopefully FromSoftware can at least address the most horrific bugs in the day-one patch, since Elden Ring has gone gold.
