New AMD GPUs Rumored to Launch Next Month

New AMD GPUs Rumored to Launch Next Month

AMD’s R9 280 is one of the best value-for-money graphics cards out there, but it’s still running on old Tahitian GPU hardware from the previous generation. At the moment the rumors are dying, and we’re hearing suggestions that AMD is working on a replacement for the older chip codenamed Tonga.

The new Graphics Core Next chips are designed to solve a problem with current AMD mid-range graphics cards, which is that they are both too power hungry and too hot for mid-range GPUs. The new Tonga GPUs are designed to be more energy efficient while still delivering great gaming performance.

There are rumors that Tonga GPUs run on the new 20nm production process, but I’m skeptical. Nvidia looks like they’ll be releasing high-end Maxwell GPUs on their existing 28nm process later this year; I don’t see AMD taking the leap on mid-range refresh GPUs and going into 20nm.

Regardless of the actual specs of the transistors that make up the new GPU’s components, it seems likely that Tonga GPUs could make their way into AMD’s lineup in a similar fashion to the current R9 280 and R9 280X. Tonga is expected to feature the same 2,048 cores and the same 2GB GDDR5 framebuffer as the 280X.

If new GPUs hit the market for the same dollar price, with at least the same gaming performance, but with lower temperatures and power consumption, we might see some serious mid-range graphics cards. Maxwell currently has impressive results in both low-end performance and power efficiency, and AMD will need to work on improving the efficiency of its own GPUs if it wants to stay in the game.
