Nvidia and AMD go head-to-head in the bundling war. Do you want AAA games or free games?

Earlier this week, Nvidia fought back a massive bundling war with a $150 F2P content giveaway. This is about £100 in “real” money. If the lure of having an all-new performance pixel pusher around your PC monitor to handle polygons isn’t enough to tempt you to give up your hard-earned cash, Nvidia wants to give you extra pocket money in three top free-play games will dictate your way.

It’s a different take on gaming bundles compared to rival GPU maker AMD. They recently launched the Never Settle Reloaded Bundle, which offers AAA games on the HD 7800 and HD 7900 series with newly purchased graphics cards.

Still, Nvidia is banking on the explosion of the free-to-play market, not a bunch of new games, which is more appealing.

They support Hawken, the poster child for Planetside 2, World of Tanks, and PhysX, by purchasing new GTX cards. That means anything from a GTX 650 up.

This bundle comes in two tiers, with the purchase of a GTX 650 or GTX 650 Ti for $25 worth of in-game items for three free games, and any item from GTX 660 and above for $50 each value pack.

For example, in Planetside 2, lower tier cards will give you an “equipment” pack that includes infantry camos, weapon camos, exclusive guns, a 7-day experience bonus, and a 7-day resource bonus (equivalent to 2500 cash stations) .

When you buy a GTX 660 or higher, you’ll get the “Premium Gear” pack, which includes Infantry Camo, Weapon Camo, Vehicle Camo, Exclusive Guns, 7-Day Squad XP Boost, 7-Day Squad Resource Boost, 7 Days Experience bonus, 7-day resource bonus, equivalent to 5000 station cash.

In this way, we avoid the embarrassment of exchange rate fluctuations between different regions.

On the other hand, AMD is giving away Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite for free with the purchase of an HD 7900-series card, and Bioshock: Infinite and Tomb Raider for free with the purchase of an HD 7800-series card.

When these games are released, no matter what…

It’ll be interesting to see if Nvidia’s bundles are just there to lure cardholders who are already on the cutting edge of free-to-play, or if AMD’s reliance on good old-school AAA games has an effect on them.

Our question for Friday, though: if you’re in the market for a new GPU, all things being equal (and we know they really aren’t) which of these two latest game bundles will make you go green or The red side of the graphics card gap is big?
