Outriders ride smoother with these small tweaks

This week, Outriders caught our attention. The game has mixed emotions from players and critics: Some say it’s the best thing since sliced bread, while others, including our own Morgan Park, don’t believe it’s worth the admission. Either way, it sounds like this game has some potential to stick around, which means you should spend a little time in the settings menu to make sure it’s fine-tuned and running at its best.

API – DirectX 12 or DirectX 11?

If you’re playing on a PC, the first decision you face when launching a game is whether you want to play DirectX 11 (DX11) or DirectX 12 (DX12). Naturally, you may want to choose the newer of the two, DX12, which is sure to be the API of choice for Outriders HQ because of its potential benefits.

In my testing, neither API offered much performance gain, but DX12 has been widely reported to have stuttering issues, in which case you may find DX11 a convenient alternative . Historically, DX11 has provided a more stable alternative to DX12, which has had more than its fair share of weirdness over the years.

movie camera smoothing

If you start playing Outriders (at least when you jump into tête-à-tête), one thing in the cutscene that immediately catches your eye is camera shake. It’s like watching Armando Iannucci perform. However, there’s something about the space age where everything goes horribly wrong and doesn’t fit the almost comic wobbly style.

Therefore, I highly recommend you to look at the Cinema Camera Smoothing settings under the Gaming tab in the settings. There, you can enjoy the vibration to the fullest. I recommend starting with 0.25 If it still doesn’t fit, work from there.

Movie maximum FPS

Cinematic Max FPS is self-explanatory. If you’re not happy with the default frame rate of 30fps for in-game animations, you can turn it up for a smoother image. I highly recommend using it with the Cinema Camera Smoothing setting. It might get a little nasty otherwise.

NVIDIA DLSS

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling. This is a feature included with modern Nvidia graphics cards of the RTX 20-series and 30-series, and uses machine learning to upscale any given frame. In our case, it was the key to the high frame rate of Outriders on compatible cards.

There are several settings to choose from: Quality, Balance, Performance, Ultra Performance.

You’re sacrificing clarity and detail for speed for every notch of performance. However, Outriders runs on DLSS 2.0, Nvidia’s second major attempt at implementing AI upgrades, and it’s been very successful at that. So depending on the resolution and settings, you may sometimes have a hard time distinguishing between native and DLSS.

That’s not to say you won’t notice any difference between the two sides of the equation. For example, at the Performance and Ultra-Performance levels, you may notice that the character’s hair is not as crisp, but they provide the highest frame rates.

Regarding the performance gains expected from DLSS, here are my own in-game test results.

Outriders DLSS benchmark results

DLSS Average (fps) 0.1% low point (fps)
Ultra high performance 176 136
Performance 150 122
balanced 141 107
quality 125 61
disabled 107 62

You can also check out the comparison images below to help you make up your mind, but My suggestion is to see how you are using the quality DLSS settings And only change it if you’re not happy with the frame rate there.

Auto loot minimum rarity

Move away from graphics settings for a while and you’ll find this handy gaming setup. By default, this is set to “Epic”, which ensures that any epic or higher value loot is automatically swept into the character’s toolkit. Put it in an ordinary place and you will become a cosmic magpie. Congratulations.
