Graphics card maker Palit must be a fan of PC Gamer, as they’ve apparently seen my jury-rigged, passively cooled GTX 750 Ti from April and must have been inspired to create their own.

Arrogance aside, the Palit GTX 750 Ti KalmX takes Nvidia’s standard reference design with a hefty heatsink mounted on the GPU. Not only that, but the copper base also covers the power components. Because they follow the reference design, the GTX 750 Ti KalmX does not require any external PCIe power connectors to run in your machine. This makes it an excellent choice for a small living room machine, combining small size, low power requirements and completely silent operation.

They didn’t mess with the clock speed either. The base clock follows the reference card’s 1,020MHz, and the turbo is 1,085MHz. KalmX actually exceeded 1,110MHz in some cases, but with the default temperature target of 80ºC, I found that the GPU would slip back to base clock speed during playback.

The drop in clock speed doesn’t really affect gaming performance, if at all, and in a small machine I’d rather sacrifice a few frames per second to get rid of the roar of the graphics card’s turbines.

I’m a huge fan of this humble graphics card, and it really highlights how impressive Maxwell’s GPU architecture is. That’s why I’m frustrated that we don’t see a 20nm GTX 880 running a high-end Maxwell GPU.

Nvidia’s high-end Maxwell parts should arrive in the fall/fall with GM204 GPUs, but as of now, we still don’t know if this will be a lower-power 20nm GPU, or if Nvidia will stick with the more power-hungry, Aged 28nm production process.
